Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

If you like Police Squad!, I would also recommend Angie Tribeca and A Touch of Cloth.

The suspect: married, one child; that didn’t work out so he married a grown woman.

Apparently “My Life Is Murder” with Lucy Lawless is coming back. It was a fun show, and seeing Lucy and her amazing outfits is never bad.

We watched the first episode of The Regime with Kate Winslet. It started off promising but we quickly lost interest. Satirizing something (Trump) that is already a farce is kind of pointless and ultimately more depressing than funny.

Started watching the Lethal Weapon series, which I didn’t even know existed. Stars Damon Wayans as Murtaugh and Clayne Crawford as Riggs. It’s not bad as rip-offs go, and Keesha Sharp is nice to look at. It’s a bit repetitive, but as non-serious entertainment when I’m bored, it’ll do.

I signed up for a free week of MyOutdoor TV just to watch season 6 of Hollywood Weapons. The firearm/explosive tests are still pretty cool, and Larry Zanoff’s attention to safety protocols are worth noting–the guy knows his stuff.

However, the comedy/banter setups between tests, which were corny to begin with, are really getting bad. If this is the last season I wouldn’t be upset.

My understanding is that the two actors hated each other, to the point where one was dismissed from the show. I thought I heard the other one left eventually as well?

Looks like you’re right. Crawford was actually fired from the show for bad behavior and hostility between him and the crew. So they killed off the Riggs character and replaced him with someone else. Wayans quit of his own accord in 2018. Shit must have gotten bad for all that to happen.

I finished Stargate a week or two ago. All in all, it was enjoyable, if not perfect. It was annoying that the show ended without finally resolving its then-main conflict (but they took care of that in The Ark of Truth, a TV movie).

I’m in season 2 of Stargate Atlantis. Enjoyable as well.

I don’t see anyone mentioning Babylon 5. I binged that a year or so back. As one might imagine, SF is a preferred genre here… but back when it was originally on, the kids were young and we basically had no time for TV - and it was either that or Deep Space Nine. So B5 lost out (though I was surprised that I’d seen a larger number of season 1 episodes than I’d thought).

I also binged that some time in the last year or so. Fun, for the most part, but as time went by, there was the sense that more and more, his obsession with clearing his name wound up destroying everyone close to him.

His brother died by being in the way of a sniper, IIRC, and his mother sacrificed herself to save others.

I’m on episode 6 of 8 of the Korean Netflix series A Killer Paradox (starring Choi Woo-shik from Parasite). A loser who was bullied in high school flips out and kills a guy in self-defense; is it just tragic happenstance or does fate have something else in store?

I’m not sure how I’d describe it: maybe one part The Dead Zone, one part Dexter and one part Kick-Ass? It’s definitely keeping my interest so far.

FWIW, the complete series of Mad Men seems to go on sale at the Apple TV Store/iTunes pretty frequently in the $18-$20 range or so.

Just finished "the middle " the end was pretty much a happy ending …

A Gentleman In Moscow (2023, Prime) I love the book and while I like Ewan Mcgregor as an actor and a person I don’t feel he’s right for the role. The Count was quiet, polite, clever but reserved and formal. His transformation over the tale is slight, but important to show his care for Nina. Ewan is too charming, good looking and down to Earth to get at the books nuance.

Still, he can act, the supporting cast is fine, and significant production money was thrown at this with the result that after 3 episodes I cannot wait for more.

Nightmares and Daydreams

This is a Netflix show from Indonesian director Joko Anwar, who I am a big fan of. First of all, please realize it has English audio and the dub is really good. Secondly, it is an anthology show like Black Mirror, though this one has a few more connections between episodes than some shows. Each episode works on its own as a standalone story, but there is a bit of a connection between them that kind of develops over the series run.

Secondly, it isn’t his best work, though it was a fun watch. If you are interested in learning about Joko Anwar, who is a big director in Indonesia, you would do well to watch:

  • Impetigore
  • Satan’s Slaves

Those two movies really show how great a director he is.

Anyway, easy for this show to slip through the cracks, but you should check it out.

We watched the first episode last night. It kept us engaged mostly because we have dealt with the same aging parent issues as the protagonist. The details of the supernatural elements were frustratingly vague, though.

thank you for the reminder… saturday is planned.

I’ve watched the first three episodes of The Gentlemen, and am considering stopping. The bumbling brother is just too stupid. The stoner dude is just too typical stoner dude.

Is it a drama or is it a comedy? It seems to be failing at each.

Does it get any better or should I stop now?

I thought the quality was consistent throughout, but I enjoyed it, so if it doesn’t float your boat by now I don’t think it will to be honest.

Everything in The Gentleman is way over the top. That’s it’s charm, I guess.

Guy Richie wants desperately to be the British Tarantino so that guy has no motivation to be seen as a subtle film maker with nuance.

Okay, I’m done with it. Guy Ritchie aint no Tarantino. I’d re-watch any of Tarantino’s films, but I felt insulted by Ritchie’s work.
