Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I watched that when it was on ITV a year or two ago. I found it really disappointing. The story just never went anywhere interesting.

From what I’ve read, this adaptation is reasonably faithful to the original novel, so perhaps we can blame Agatha Christie for that?

Yes definitely not one of her best!

There are a couple of other versions of that story. Avoid the one with Miss Marple inserted (Joan Hickson, IIRC). It’s awful.

One with Francesca Annis was rather good. I haven’t seen that newer one.

I’d never even heard of this book from her. I see it is a totally different protagonist than her typical ones.

Bobby Jones? Is this the only novel he is the lead in?

I think so, yes, the character appears only in this novel. (And by the way, according to Wikipedia, the novel also notes that this Bobby Jones is different from the American golfer, who was widely known at the time of original publication.)

I think the word you’re looking for is “subtext.”

I don’t usually binge watch shows but lately on Youtube I have been burning through the old gameshow What’s My Line. It is so entertaining and enjoyable. The panelists definitely make the show.

We just binged Season 1 of Schmigadoon (Apple TV), which for anyone who loves (or even just doesn’t despise) mid-century musicals is a complete hoot.

Every episode features brilliant parodies/homages to Rogers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, etc., but this number by Kristen Chenoweth in episode five is the absolute topper.

“Tribulation & Strife” is a tour-de-force tribute to The Music Man’s showstopper, “Ya Got Trouble,” and Kristen and the company do it here in one incredible uninterrupted four-minute take.

I posted the singalong version with the lyrics so you can better appreciate their wittiness. But don’t miss all of the little touches of Kristen’s brilliant performance.

She has the most annoying voice in the industry.

One chef’s opinion.

I don’t think she’d have become a major star of stage and screen if that were a common viewpoint.

Agreed. I’ve definitely heard her sounding less munchkin-like, but her voice is what it is, and she’s a hell of a singer.

You’re not wrong. Yes, her voice is quite nasal but goddamn is she a powerhouse.

I binged the first season of Netflix’s The Resident, a medical drama. The doctors are all miracle workers and the administration is all evil. I might watch some more.

I’m watching Decameron on Netflix. It’s about a group of medieval nobles and their servants who move to an estate in the country to get away from the Black Plague. Multiple stories and lots of sex and deception.

I spotted Saoirse-Monica Jackson from the great comedy, Derry Girls. She looks quite different, but her line readings told me who she was. I’ve been choosing shows and Derry Girls actresses keep popping up: Renegade Nell, Big Mood, and Bridgerton.

I also spotted someone from Sex Education, another favorite.

I finished Season 1 of Your Honor on Netflix. It was hard to root for any character, as they were all flawed. Still, it was entertaining, and I’ll start Season 2 soon.

I just watched that entire performance yesterday! I was marvelling at her voice during the whole show. She even blew Patti Lupone off the stage.

I binged The Tyrant on Hulu, a South Korean drama following their recent trend of covert government super-soldier programs. Only 4 episodes, yet it still seemed to be stretching things. Better fight FX than the recent Moving. Surprisingly political with anti-US sentiments and throws some shade of Korean-Americans, especially those working for the US government.

In the middle of this right now. Enjoying it. Like the approach they’ve taken. Kind of reminds me a little bit of Voyagers!, but funnier.
