Based on this thread we watched the pilot of the Kathy Bates’ Matlock. Yeah, it was pretty good with a bigger backstory than most people would expect. I figured there was “something else” going on but not like this.
Will watch more.

Oh heck, I forgot about Silo…I’d read the first few books and then watched the first three or four episodes, and then…I think we canceled our Apple +? But we have it back now for Slow Horses, I might go back to that.
Yeah, and she isnt solving cases with brilliant court work, etc- just by getting people to testify/talk with her folksy charm.
I’m curious to see how the character develops next season.
Beau Bridges has to be cast for a reason. He’s had a small role. That’s unusual for an actor with his experience.
Season 2 starts this weekend.
Also, on Apple TV, the first two episodes of season 2 of Bad Sisters just dropped. I like the back and forth between the lead detective (his “golf nickname” is Adolf because he had two shots in the bunker) and his weird rookie assistant detective.
Binged The Diplomat on Netflix. Really enjoyed it. What an ending!
Just finished A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder on Netflix, which I would recommend for murder mystery officianados. It’s a decent enough mystery, but the real draw is the lead actress, who is excellent (and somewhat unrecognizable from her role on Wednesday.)
Story-wise, I think they threw in one too many twists, which made the ending seem a bit muddled and rushed, but otherwise it was tense, fun, well-written and well-acted. Sadly, as soon as the perpetrator appeared on screen, I turned to my wife and said “[They] did it” and I was (mostly) right, so I guess I may have read and seen too many mysteries
Also, content warning with a minor spoiler: A dog is killed. Which I was quite surprised about. It’s not gruesome or anything, but quite sad.
Just binge watched this. I liked it and wow.
I agree with what you said.
Reminds me of the short story To All The Rude People.
Thanks for the discussion!
I’ve watched the next two episdoes (it’s pretty intense so I didn’t binge), and it’s definitely keeping my interest. I love that knife. It’s quite fascinating to me.
While I’m enjoying Silo, the only jarring note is the acting by Common. The guy is clearly not good at it, being stiff and rehearsed. A good actor delivers lines like they’re coming from his own brain, not being read off a page.
Started watching Vox Machina season 3, and realize I remember very little of season 2. I recall some entertaining search for magical wozznames, but nothing about how they used them on the Chroma Conclave, who is apparently still in play. Rewatched last episode of season 2, and is somewhat up to speed, but not that enthusiastic about continuing on the series.
Never played D&D by the way, so not bothered by any lore/rules breaking there.
Still love Keyleth, who sort of reminds me of a more together version of Discworlds Magrat. Percy is also enjoyable. Scanlan (or as I think of him cruder Casanunda) and Grog are often really tiresome. Rest of VM is ok but thats it. One of the dragons is voiced by Lance Reddick (RIP) which is nice, but still their rank/personality blend together in my mind.
Watched the Tyson/Paul fight. Not a series, but it sure was long.
Saw Dark Winds listed on Netflix and thought oh yeah, that got some good recs in the ‘Watching’ thread. Also I had read a few of the Tony Hillerman books back in the day.
Ep1 was really good. Wife and I are hooked. Thanks everybody who mentioned it positively here!
Grog is certainly my least favourite. I don’t mind Scanlan, but I wasn’t particularly interested in his wandering around looking for his daughter. I also thought Percy’s death was a bit of a damp squib. But otherwise I really enjoyed season 3; there was lots of action and some good character moments.
Season 2 was a great ride. I think 3 of the 6 episodes had gut punch twists.
I cancelled Netflix, but I’m going to have to sign back up so I can watch The Diplomat. I signed up for Apple TV so I’ve been going through everything of interest on there.
I thoroughly enjoyed Bad Monkey. Vince was so endearing. I really liked it very much.
I didn’t enjoy Presumed Innocent much, but I don’t think Jake is a good actor. He was just not believable as a high powered attorney, nor as a father.
I am in the process of watching Say Nothing. It’s very well done and the casting of the aging characters is extraordinarily spot on. There were a couple times I had to search to see if it was the same actor with aging makeup or a different one.
It’s a difficult watch at times but this is the kind of programming I gravitate towards.
A fairly quick watch but we zipped right through Nobody Wants This, a show about a blond, Caucasian, agnostic woman who makes a living doing a fairly vapid, sex-themed podcast meeting and falling in love with a rabbi.
Good show, the mains had a lot of chemistry together.
There were a few moments where the writers applied the hand of god to fix the character’s predicaments that, I suppose, matched the theme of the story but did feel quite forced. Other than that though, a very good story and very pleasant watch.
I realized that I spaced out on giving an actual description…
As I understand it, one of the creators of the show worked for a couple of years as a producer for The Bachelor.
The background of the story and season 1, in particular, seem to stem from that experience. It’s all about people manipulating each other for the sake of drama. And our main character is a person who is a natural at that, but also hates that aspect of herself.
Overall, it’s quite interesting. As said above, I think that it should have been a hit.
Funny, what threw me off about S1 is that it’s impossible (for me) for Tim Robbins to play anyone but Tim Robbins. He’s very Tim Robbins-y.
I binge-watched the first five episodes of this series over the weekend. It was reasonably entertaining.
