Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Yes- it is fine that their beliefs are part of their world- since they really are. And to have people frightened of certain things. But actually have it occurs is too much.

I just finished all 4 seasons of Miracle Workers and I quite liked the last season. Season 3 was definitely the low point in my book (although it still had its moments).

Yes, season 2 was the best, but then it just god more and more stupid. Great cast, but I hate stupid comedy.

I was going to post a note about re-watching Keeping Up Appearances but had a vague recollection of having mentioned it before, as indeed I did. I can’t believe I only discovered this gem a few years ago.

I’ll just add that the humour in this is so richly detailed that it’s every bit as good the second time around. Patricia Routledge is magnificent as the ridiculously snobbish and domineering Hyacinth Bucket, and when she decided that five seasons was enough and moved on to other projects, the BBC had no choice but to cancel the series because she was irreplaceable. Great casting and great acting by all the supporting cast, too. I particularly like Geoffrey Hughes as Hyacinth’s bone-idle layabout brother-in-law, who has a perpetually stunned expression and is unfazed by anything; his principal occupations are watching horse racing on an old TV that has to be firmly hit in order to operate, and showing up unexpectedly at Hyacinth’s house in his undershirt whenever she’s trying to hold a pretentious social function.

Roy Clarke, who created the series and wrote all 44 episodes, is a comedic genius. Currently 94 and, I believe, still writing.

I assume, then, that you’ve watched Open All Hours and its sequel series, the much more recent Still Open All Hours.

Man, I am loving The Diplomat. The acting is so so good. Really a terrific show.

I feel bad that I don’t like Matlock. Actually, I hate the whole thing. I dislike Monk as well.

I’m looking forward to the new Lincoln Lawyer, in spite of my disappointment in season 2. Season 1 was good enough to give it one more chance.

I’m two episodes into A Man On The Inside and am loving it. The effortless charm of the cast, the assured hand of creator Michael Schur of The Good Place fame. Definitely worth a watch.

I watch Orange is the new Black with my wife sometimes. She likes it and is almost through all the seasons.

I love Monk. He is a bit like my late mother. Never a speck of dust in her house. And while I’m not nearly as clean, things go in their correct place.

Onslow (and Hyacinth’s sister Daisy’s husband). I think they’re my favorite characters. Who’s the tarty sister (forgetting her name) – she has her moments. Mostly, I get bored by Hyacinth. She does the same things the same ways forever and ever amen. And I hate the woman living next door who keeps getting the shakes because Hyacinth makes her nervous. Again, it’s overworked to death. I can’t watch many episodes before it makes me really irritated.

“Onslow” is an inspired name for this character!

Rose, referred to by the family as “our Rose”. All the sisters are named after flowers – Hyacinth, Rose, and Violet.

Well, to each his own, but I’m endlessly amused by Hyacinth’s antics. In a way, the consistency of her wacky behaviour is kinda the point.

Which is fine. I think taste in comedy is the most variable.

Arghh!! Hyacinth, Rose, Violet, and of course Daisy!

So do I! I was one of the fans who preferred Bitty Schram to her replacement.

I still crack up every time I see a tag on a piece of new clothing that says “Inspected by ____”.

It cracks me up that Ted Levine (police captain) was the serial killer Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. “It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again!”

I finished it and I really enjoyed it. I recognized Susan Ruttan but I didn’t recognize Sally Struthers until I saw the credits!

Veronica Cartwright from Alien was also very recognisable to me.

Seconded!
Say Nothing is a nine-episode miniseries (on Hulu) about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. You see the conflict from the point of view of both the IRA paramilitaries and their victims. It tells an amazing story yet also hews closely to the facts. It’s the best docudrama I’ve watched since Chernobyl.

Oh, me too.

I just binged That Dirty Black Bag. Wow, what an experience. A western with a bit of punk added. Looking forward to season two.
