I’m completely straight, but I think if I ever met him and he started flirting with my 72-year-old ass I’m sure I’d take it as a compliment.
Season 6 is when they seriously started to outpace the available written material. They had a lot of notes, not yet published stuff and Martin’s input, but the content was more and more original stuff and Martin stopped writing episode screenplays (he had done one a season prior to this). This situation would greatly accelerate from this season on.
The show is definitely worse than the books IMHO, but the books still deserve some real criticism on that count. To be fair Martin is pretty shitty to everyone in his stories and he does seem to have tried to write strong female characters. But there was a lot of discussion about this back in the day. Here’s one non-spoilery ( some of the comment discussion goes into details, but I think you’re about up to date with all of it) blog post I vaguely remembered that I thought made some good points, even though the author did kinda enjoy the books. A few thoughtful comments as well, mostly agreeing, a few not.
Same here.
I started School Spirits and wasn’t sure about it. What really annoyed me about it is that it’s a Young Adult Detective show but they don’t follow clues, but emotions. “I hate her! She must have had something to do with it!” This repeated itself several times. That was almost enough to turn me off the show. I’m glad I stuck with it because I did get into it. If anything, I was annoyed that I caught up and only had three episodes of s2 to watch. The reveal at the end of s1 opened up world building that I’m more interested in seeing. It also really changed the tone of the show by asking if she will get it back. Reminds me of Upload in that regard.
I have tried to get into Spartucus show several times, because I liked the show Rome. It seems like this would be a good area where they could use history but tell their own story because so little is known about Spartacus. I feel like they hype up the blood too much and that cinematography is annoying. There were hints at the politics, which I find more interesting. I don’t know if I will go back to it or not.
I don’t know if I ever finished Lost Girl but started that again. I hope to watch more of that.
One thing I have noticed about myself is that I’m starting to watch more and more shows on at least 1.5x. If all I’m doing is watching the show, I don’t think I miss anything. I have watched so many at that speed that watching School Spirits at 1.5x felt slow and went to 1.75x. Lost Girl I might watch at 2x. For background things, to get the “gist” of it, I might leave those at 1x but that’s mostly podcasts or news stuff.
Thanks for the discussion!
Something in another thread reminded me of Moone Boy and now I’m rewatching that again.
Watched the 3 seasons of Hacks. I’ve always been a fan of Jean Smart and now I’m … fannier(?).
Just an absolutely great show … except …
The other main character/actress is just bad. Makes a nothing-burger look good by comparison. Over and over she takes me out of the show. How she got cast is beyond me.
And, let’s face it, there’s a lot of other stuff that is borderline realistic. E.g., that QVC is considered a big growing concern that is competing just fine with the Internet. Right.
Note that Carol Leifer is a co-executive producer (whatever that is) for some of the episodes and wrote 1. Since that season won a writing Emmy, Carol got one of those.
Still, it’s worth it and then some just to watch Jean Smart doing her thing.
Huh. I really like Hannah Einbinder, and I think she does a great job with a challenging role. You can see her constantly doing the mental cost-benefit analysis of staying in what is essentially an abusive relationship.
I did not like the way her relationship with her girlfriend was handled at the beginning of season 3, but that was the writers’ fault, not Hannah’s.
Thanks for the heads up on Moone Boy. My last attempt to watch it was when the local PBS station started re-airing episodes, but stopped after just a few. Oh balls!
I am watching Leverage finally. Just starting Season 2
I havecthe first year of Friends on DVD, but it didn’t engage me. From the clips on Flakebook, I suspect all the good jokes are in the credits or the bloopers
First season really wasnt funny, it didnt take off until later. However- altho a pleasant way to waste a half hour, I never thought that show was all that funny anyway. IMHO.
I think Friends was a success because it was aimed at 20-somethings starring 20-somethings. There were a lot of 90s shows with that target in mind, which wasn’t common for sitcoms, and so there was a new audience for it, the same folk who grew up with Family Ties, Growing Pains, Diff’rent Strokes, etc. Any one of the similar themed shows could’ve been the hit, it was luck of the draw that it was Friends.
Sure, but even not being a 20 something, we watched it and enjoyed it. But I think most fans agree S1 wasnt the best.
Does no one remember the series Thirty-something?
It was certainly a Gen X show
I agree! I haven’t seen Season 3 yet, but I thought she was excellent so far.
I was just thinking about that show a few weeks ago. I used to hate-watch it. It held my attention, at least.
Indeed, it has the second lowest average IMDb rating of all 10 seasons.
Probably the most overrated programme I’ve ever seen. I’m baffled by the enormous success it had, and still has.
We’re about mid-way through S9 of Death in Paradise, D.I. Jack Mooney has left to go back home and from what I’ve read on Wikipedia most of the rest of the cast is gone by the end of the season. I think we may be just about done with this one even though it looks like there are several more seasons to go.
When you finish watching Leverage be sure to check out Leverage:Redemption on Netflix. A continuation several years after the original; two seasons so far, with a third season coming.
Not remotely as good as the originals, with the missing crew members.
