Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

We’re still working through The Residence but got sidetracked by a half-hour Kevin Bacon horror/comedy on Prime: The Bondsman. The premise is “bounty hunter for the devil” featuring a demon-of-the-week. After four episodes. it’s already wearing thin.

I just finished The Bondsman. It’s not particularly original, but I’m a fan of both Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Nettles, so I thought it was ok. One thing’s for sure, once you’ve seen it you’ll never think of the term “jaw-dropping” in the same way again.

Wasn’t that ‘Reaper’ about 20 years ago?

Or Brimstone, almost 30 years ago?

Yeah. Stan Against Evil and several others, too.

I just finished E2 of The Bondsman and I’m done. It all seems very tired and forced. Bacon must need the money.

We just watched the first episode of The Bondsman tonight, and really liked it. But I’m worried about the demon of the week attitude.

We finished The Residence. Lots of fun characters, but 8 hours is way too long for a parlor mystery.

Regarding The Residence: We felt the same way. Much too long. It started out promising but as it went on we began to lose interest. We saw it through to the end but quite honestly, at that point we didn’t really care who the murderer would turn out to be. It should have been six episodes max.

We watched the first episode of The Bondsman, mostly because I really like Brimstone back in the day.
I said to my wife “it has possibilities”.
She just stared at me. So…

Yes it is. Watched it today. Very good.

We’re also watching The Bondsman, and I like it, although so far there’s been something so gory in every episode I had to look away! And I don’t care about his ex-wife.

My hate watch of season 3 of White Lotus did not disappoint. After last night’s finale I hate the show even more. The show has the most fucked up moral compass on TV.

I started watching MobLand over the weekend on Paramount +. They have only released two episodes so far, but I am not sure how much longer I am going to stick with it. The scenes with Tom Hardy are great; it is everything else that is kind of meh. Helen Mirren’s accent and dialogue are terrible and make most of her scenes almost unwatchable.

Perhaps I am getting soft in my old age. I find it hard to get into movies and tv shows where everyone is cruel. I quit watching House of the Dragons after season 1 for the same reason. The world is bad enough without having my entertainment filled with characters without any real redeeming features.

Absolutely!

Or even moments of levity in daily life! You telling me no Viking ever cracked a joke? Not according to 13 seasons of Vikings, everyone just communicates daily in that threatening overdone growl.

“Hey Thorskin, you’re a badass Viking and everything but you ate paste in middle school. Calm down pal, you’re not in Valhalla yet.”

That’s pretty much the whole point though, isn’t it? I mean, it’s basically about people with fucked-up moral compasses. Cynical as it may be, I find that more interesting than the usual “good guys triumph over bad guys” predictably.

Not that I thought this season’s finale was great. My biggest complaint is that they seem to be trying to outdo themselves each time. Next season, what, the resort blows up and everybody dies?

Started the final season of Bosch - Legacy. It pretty much picks up where things left off. The actor playing the daughter seems to have more life to her.

The Devil’s Game

Don’t let the title mislead you. It’s a game show of sort, not horror at all. It features really smart people, at least for the most part, who come together and play a series of strategic and intelligent games.

A Korean show, it has an English dub that I am using. The players are all really friendly to each other and fun to watch and I find myself cheering for everyone in the game.

This is not a game for your average player. The rules to the main games take over 5 minutes sometimes to explain and until the games are underway, it can be pretty confusing as to what the goals are.

About $4 million is the maximum pot for the winner, but the games are hard enough that it is clear they are not going to reach that amount.

This streams on Netflix and my wife and I love it. The main thing that helps is that the players are all really upbeat and positive. We want them all to do well.

For those that like the game Mafia, the first game they played was indeed mafia with a lot of roles and stuff. It was pretty fascinating to watch them play.

It came out in 2023 and I hear there is a second season coming soon. I love it.

I enjoyed the Bondsman but do agree it’s tropey. However. I like that hell uses 900 numbers for support. I like that hell might not have the best people so make do with what they have. I like that they use faxes and other older tech. I like that hell doesn’t give any powers except for healing if they aren’t killed. I liked the resolution at the end, with Bacon’s character staying selfish. Having said that, I don’t like shows watching bad people, especially when they get away with it. It could wear thin quickly but I had fun watching it.

We stalled out on The Rookie but I’m rewatching it to see if it will pull me back. So sad about Annie Wersching because I think she was great. I was struck at how much they have learned since the early episodes, something that’s easier to see when binged. I think the upcoming bad guy Elijah Stone was well done with acting and writing. He is one of the few bad guys that scared me. I’m glad I don’t know anyone like that! (And he was in one of the best movies ever! Tucker and Dale v Evil) I do watch these at fast speed and except for a few fight scenes don’t miss much, IMO.

@Mahaloth is it Devil’s Game or Devil’s Plan? Thanks!

Thanks for the discussion!

Plan.

Thank your or the correction! I would say HIGHLY recommended!
