Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I would like to say I enjoyed it, but it was a brutal watch. A lesson in acting by Anna Maxwell as the victim. One of the best crime/based on a true story shows I’ve seen in a long time.

I’ll say that the fourth season represents a shift in tone, and essentially introduces a whole new plot. So don’t expect the same viewing experience.

Having said that, I maintain that it is still excellent television and well worth watching, especially if you’ve become invested in the characters throughout the previous seasons.

Murderbot on Apple TV+

I only read the first book, but two episodes in, it seems the TV series has the same issue the book does, which is that it’s kind of amusing and nice but doesn’t really develop any pathos or complex character development or say anything interesting about human nature.

I’m hoping the TV series breaks away from that but so far it has not. I’d file this under “cute.”

(And I’d file Skarsgard under “hot,” so probably going to finish it anyway.)

Heh, Skardgard was on Colbert last week touting this show, and he told him how everyone mispronounces his name. It’s really more like Skardgourd.

This is exactly why all the Star Wars TV series and sequels are getting mixed reactions, because nostalgic fans can’t be objective. They want the same thrill they got as kids, but now as adults. An impossible task to do that every time, while an IP still serves a wide audience but which favours kids.

That’s why Disney are trying different genres and tones for each kind of show, so they can sprinkle through them something to please different factions of the audience, or be the new favourite for the next generation of fans.

But stubborn nerds are just outright rejecting them wholesale if they don’t specifically cater to their desires. Or has a black woman in it.

Not sure where to put this, so it’s going here. I just finished the first episode of the new season of Poker Face and noticed this:

On purpose or coincidence?

Old joke, going back to Edison. :innocent: Better when the Zuckers did it, of course- mind you, they struck comedy gold with Airplane!, few can compare.

Love it…Love

I watched ep 1 yesterday. Harriet the new farmhand is fantastic.

I imagine I would find that series very entertaining, and I used to love Top Gear back 15-20 years ago, but… I just can’t bring myself to watch it because I think JC is just a complete… well you can fill in the blank.

He’s surprisingly more sympathetic in this series because it’s a lot less artifice and a genuine exploration of the real challenges of farming. However, he remains a big obstinate doofus, so, fair enough if you’re not up for it.

He seems to be trying to soften his edges, but in reality, he’s a right wing troll and always will be, he’s been pushing the right wing narrative of the farmers in the UK via this, despite his farm largely being a inheritance tax dodge.

I have no doubt the endgame of this will be a run for UK Prime Minister in charge of the Tories or Reform (the racist party), so this is almost a circa 2005 Trump type of show.

New cosy mystery series alert: Death Valley starring Tim Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth. It’s set in Wales, and has a lot of quirky characters in a bucolic village, as you’d expect. Early days, I’m only a wee way in, but I am optimistic.

Where can one find this show?

Based on others’ recommendations here, my wife and I watched “The Residence” on Netflix this weekend. Very enjoyable, but I thought the last episode dragged on a little too long. I guess I’m used to my murder mystery detectives laying out the whole crime in five minutes, not taking an entire hour.

My wife and I have enjoyed the three episodes released so far. While the topic is different it gives Resident Alien vibes for it’s black dead pan humor. It must be the classic angsty teen graphic novel trope, because The End of the F*ing World was similar as well.

Oh yeah. I get it from the mysterious Elsewhere, but it is officially on BBC One, so it may be a while before it gets to international screens.

A while ago I re-watched Seinfeld for yet another time, and I loved it so much that I started a whole thread on it. Now I’m doing it yet again, although this time I just picked out what I remembered as being my favourite episodes.

Still working my way through, but damn, that was so much fun that I’m now determined to watch the rest of them yet again. I now have to figure out how to do an XOR function on the episode list to pick out the remaining ones!

I’ve watched the first four episodes of The Librarians: the Next Chapter without ever having watched the movies or TV series. It is fine, for something to play in the background while you are doing something else. Cheesy, dumb, but not offensively so.

I wouldnt say “cheesy” but not high brow. Reminds me a bit of Warehouse 13, but without the great Saul Rubinek.
