Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

Well, that doesn’t give me much reason to be hopeful for it. :grimacing:

Question for the thread:

Has anyone watched Abbot Elementary and if so, would you recommend it?

My wife and I finished Always Sunny in Philadelphia last night(we’ve now seen all 16 seasons and are ready for new ones) and this show has come up as a possible funny show. Is it?

I’m aware the Sunny cast is crossing over with them, but I want to know if this Abbot Elementary show is funny.

Thoughts?

I have multiple friends who raved about AE and suggested that we would like it. We gave it two episodes, but it didn’t click and we never watched any more.

That said, I am notoriously hard on sitcoms. There are very, very few that I like (I find most sitcoms unbearably contrived), so take my experience with a grain of salt.

i have happened on camp cretaceous on netflix. takes place at the same time as jurassic world. the match up is really well done.

nicely mindless and lots of dino chases. it is animated, not live action.

It’s one of my favorite shows! I think there is one or two episodes where the Sunnies show up but that doesn’t happen until later. Abbot is kind of like The Office or Parks & Rec where the characters talk to the camera sometimes. It’s funny - some of the lines you have to really listen for or you’ll miss them.

We watched a couple seasons of Abbott Elementary. The show got rather tame after a while as they “Archie Bunkered” some of the delightfully despicable characters (made them softer).

If you are looking for a similar show that’s closer to the spirit of Always Sunny, check out Glen Howerton’s AP Bio.

There are 5 seasons of that, plus 3 seasons out of the sequel Jurassic World: Chaos Theory with a 4th season coming out in November.

i’m at season 3. hopefully it will get me through the weekend.

I’ve come to it late - I’m enjoying it but it hasn’t gripped me to the point of looking forward to the next episode. I’ll watch it occasionally though.

I’ve found that clips of the show are hilarious but taken as a whole the show doesn’t live up to its individual gags.

Has anybody seen the series Get Shorty on Amazon Prime? We just finished season one and it’s super good. It’s about two hit men who are tasked with laundering money for a drug kingpin, and decide to make a movie. It has Chris O’Dowd, Sean Bridgers, and god save us, Ray Romano. Check it out!

I couldn’t get into it. It just seemed like a variation on other (and better) comedies.

My wife and I both enjoy Sunny and Abbott, even though the two sitcoms could not be more different. Abbott is a more naturalistic (as far as sitcoms go) show, with the humor arising from personalities and situations that are probably not too unlikely in a real Elementary school. I’d imagine a lot of school workers would say the show is fairly true to the actual experience of being an employee of an Elementary school (besides the perpetual documentary filming shtik).

Sunny, on the other hand, is a dark comedy that takes place in a whole other alternate universe in which a group of sociopaths daily commit morally and ethically egregious stunts that routinely cross the line into full-blown illegality, with little or no consequence. The only thing the two shows have in common is that they both take place in Philly; otherwise they are light-years apart in tone and content. The Abbott episode handled their crossover show as well as could be expected; it’ll be interesting to see how they handle the Sunny episode that Abbott crosses over into.

Knew I would like Andor, but only learned it went to Hulu recently and then discovered only a few days from now it leaves Hulu!

The show is fantastic. World class. My tween son and I are loving it. Recommended for everyone, regardless of feelings on the IP’s varied past results or interest in the franchise at all.

Watched the first episode of Iron Heart. It was so dull I don’t think I’ll try any more.

I liked the movie a lot, and this cast seems even better, so I’ll check it out.

I liked Get Shorty, and Romano was really good in it, but there’s a downside to that show. I’ll spoiler it even though it doesn’t reveal anything, plot-wise.

Season 3 was a disappointment. It must have been cancelled before they could properly wrap it up and it just peters out.

Oh bugger. I’m enjoying it anyhow.

I would agree. If it was recommended as a thing like “If you like It’s Always Sunny, you’ll like this…” you shouldn’t listen to any more recommendations from that person.

Sunny is in a league by itself, although it’s certainly not for everyone. Abbott is nice and watchable.

It would really be helpful if you’d include the NAMES of the series you post so we don’t have to click on youtube links just to find out what you’re referring to.
