Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I started Mad Men a few years ago and was enjoying it. Then it disappeared from Amazon Prime halfway through. (I hate when that happens!)

I see I now have watch options available to me, so perhaps I will re-start.

It has moments of comedy, probably more so than Breaking Bad (for example).

I thought Mad Men got a little unfocused towards the end, but it’s definitely worth watching.

I would contend that Mad Men is worth the watch just for Roger Sterling.

Mad Men is my all-time favorite Golden Age TV show.

Yeah, I enjoyed the first seasons but towards the end finishing the series was a chore.

That’s how I felt until the last three minutes. Then I just sort of went “OF COURSE that was what we were heading towards . . .”

To a large extent I think that men will find it funny, and women will just feel seen. At least women who were around in the 60’s and 70’s will. Even into the 80’s and 90’s I experienced a lot of the bald-faced misogyny that they dramatized so elegantly.

We started Pluribus on Apple TV, about humanity becoming a benevolent hive mind and the woman who gets left behind. It’s an original and compelling story with a bit of dark humor. I found it a bit cringe, though, watching this destructive, angry person screw up pivotal moments. We have watched two episodes and I suspect we’ll watch the whole thing.

I thought that was cringe until I started watching The Studio which holy crap does that get uncomfortable. But very funny. Seth Rogan stars as a new movie studio head destined for failure due to his love of serious films. The show is packed with celebrities playing themselves, including famous film directors, which gives it a charming versimilitude that reminds me of The Player (only more funny than dark.) Recommended.

We’ve also picked back up in Season 2 of Andor which continues to be amazing. Every once in a while you find a show that knows exactly what it is and what it’s trying to say, and Andor is one of those. Also the scene where he stole the Imperial ship by blasting holes in the hangar had me laughing so hard even though I was on the edge of my seat.

I’m anxiously awaiting S2 of the Pitt.

It’s a drama with plenty of laughs. Even discounting the many I-can’t believe-they-did-stuff-like-that-back-then chuckles, it still has a lot of humor in it.

There’s a HUGE thread here on the show, if you’re interested.

I’m in Season 6 of my Mad Men slow watch, happy to read the commentary here. After getting past some early shocks about “how we were,” it’s settled down into a really good drama. And the Roger Sterling character is indeed hilarious. Sorry I put off watching for so long.

Watching the GOT prequel House of the Dragon and it appears to be a tired mishmash of storylines and characters better done in GOT, including a red wedding rehash. We are on S1E6, is it worth continuing?

I really liked season 1. Did not enjoy season 2. Will watch the other(two more) seasons, but will binge them, as in wait for them to have all eps available. It’s not a week-to-week show for me.

Whereas I thought season 1 was a bit too slow of a burn, and oddly structured with the time jumps. Season 2 is when shit actually starts happening, and I enjoyed it more.

As to @JohnT’s question about continuing, I would suggest at least sticking it out to the end of the first season. Both episodes 9 and 10 contain big events that help set the stage for season 2.

If by that point the show hasn’t grabbed you, then it’s not going to.

Re: Mad Men. I didn’t watch it first run, but a few years ago I saw that AMC (or somebody) was re-airing the whole show. I thought I’d watch it. But I couldn’t get past my personal flashbacks to the casual misogyny of the times, so I stopped watching it. I’m afraid it would just make me angry and stressed to watch an entire mulitseason show focused on this.

Similar to Mahaloth, I did not enjoy season 2 and actually gave up only a few episodes in. As I get older, I seem to be bothered a lot more by the over the top cruelty and violence that this show has in spades. None of the main characters seem to have any redeeming features.

I’ve almost finished s2 and I’ve enjoyed all of it, although I have preferred s2 over s1. The dramatic scenes with dragons etc are spaced out well so that just when you think it’s got a bit too talkie it roars back into life. I’ll definitely be along for s3 when it comes out. Is it as good as s1-4 of GoT? No I don’t think so, but to be honest it’s been so long since I saw that, I am not totally sure. Perhaps it doesn’t feel quite as epic and is lacking a little in scope compared to GoT.

Watched Eyes of Wakanda. 4 30 minute animated episodes from Marvel Animation. Light entertainment. Doesn’t add anything to the MCU canon. It’s about the Wakandan “War Dogs” who are covert operatives throughout history returning Wakandan artifacts to the homeland. It struck me that if Wakanda was that advanced for thousands of years they have really been slacking lately. They should be much more advanced now.

Well, at least they bought the rights.

It’s okay.

Doc Martin was better, at least to start.

Once in a while a great cast cant save a show. Witness Sheriff Country, wasting Morena Baccarin, and then earlier Mom, wasting Allison Janney. Sometimes actor take the roles because they need the money.

The Border patrol sub story is so unbelievable. But in S1 the whole “lone FBO agent spending months searching for a missing man” was even more unlikely. In all those sub stories are- to me- more unbelievable than the supernatural stuff.
Mad m

I tried 2 or 3 episodes of mad men, and really didnt like it at all, despite a pretty good cast.

good reviews …dire start …. Monster The Ed Gein Story

The Beast In Me (Netflix, 2025) I just finished this last night. Absolutely recommended. All 8 episodes were great, but the conclusion was top shelf. We all know Jonathan Banks can act, but my esteem for Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys has grown considerably. Standing ovation for everyone in the supporting cast as well.
