Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

It is picked up for a third and final season.

I’m not sure of what to make of its move to sci-fi tech fantasy. How odd.

Oh, good to hear, thanks.

Well, the main premise of ‘building an entire city within a mountain to protect a selected group of humans from a worldwide catastrophe’ had already put the show well within the bounds of sci-fi tech fantasy. But I agree that this is definitely a new wrinkle (in time) :smirk:

There is such a place called The Raven Rock Complex (or Site R) in Pennsylvania. I’m not familiar with the series you’re referring to, but this place is fairly spooky (I’ve been inside). It’s not designed to hold a city, but rather to keep the ruling VIPs safe from nuclear attack. It’s fully staffed and has facilities to feed and care people for a prolonged period, including a very large reservoir of fresh water.

Well, ok, yeah, I take your point. The difference is more quantitative than qualitative: the ‘Paradise’ refuge is a full-on ‘Truman Show’ style city, complete with a lake and a charming town square and an artificial Sun, containing tens of thousands of people. Oh and, run by not one, not two, but 4 or 5 ‘modular’ nuclear reactors. So it’s the sheer scale and feature set that IMO puts it into ‘sci-fi tech fantasy’ territory.

Yeah, of course. I wasn’t contesting your thoughts on the show, just offering some information about a place that honestly feels like it’s out of a sci-fi movie. It didn’t help that there was a cicada infestation going on when I was there, so there was that weird chirring noise going on the whole time.

Wrong thread. Never mind.

Finished binging His & Hers on Netflix last night. As others have mentioned upthread, the last five minutes reveal a very bizarre plot twist that nobody could have seen coming. Not a bad series, with many plot twists before the final one.

But for those of you who have watched it, I have a question:

Why did Richard and Lexy lure Anna to the lake house? I originally thought it was to kill her, but neither of them were the killers. Was it just to beat the crap out of her?

IIRC, taken at face value, Lexi wanted to call a truce. All the other things surrounding the situation (cancelling their hotel reservations, bleach/tarps/tools) were just red herrings to make the viewer assume Lexi was going to kill her.

Also, again IIRC I don’t think Anna knew who Lexi was yet. At that point, I think she assumed Lexi was angry that she was sleeping with her husband.

Just finished the latest Ken Burns PBS series, Henry David Thoreau, the latest Ken Burns project on PBS. A good overview of his life and times and legacy. I was a little surprised to see Robert Sullivan (author of “The Thoreau You Don’t Know”) missing from the cast of talking heads.

Well, we are now 5 episodes down and… things have progressed but definitely not in the way we expected! Talk about a change in direction from the expected narrative!

Murderbot is slowly growing on me. At first, I found the voiceover kind of grating and unnecessary, Blade Runner theatrical release style. But, well, like I said… it’s growing in me. Kind of drives home how “distinct” (one might even say “detached,” though I think that would betray the extent to which he appears to become integrated into the crew) he is from the people around him. It kind of doesn’t matter if his voiceover repeats information that we’ve just seen/heard on screen (or if the writers could have shown it to us by using a more show don’t tell style of writing) because… the murderbot doesn’t care. It only matters when it registers to him.

Playing Gracie Darling (N, 2026, 1 se.) we are 4 episodes into this 6 ep series and I’d recommend it to people looking for an Australian Yellow Jackets meets Talk to Me.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is my current brain off late night when my wife is in bed watch. It serves its purpose. I like them using Wyatt and Kurt Russell as the same character different era. I find myself more interested in the earlier plot line with Wyatt.

My wife and I watched this and enjoyed it well enough. I gave the show a capsule review and summary here after watching ep.1 a few months ago.

Double post, deleted.

Started watching The Hunting Party on NetFlix last night. It’s okay after 2 episodes, but I’m not sure where it’s going.

Has anyone watched Sunny Nights? Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden, as brother and sister, go to Australia to start their spray tan business and get themselves mixed up with the ‘wrong people’.

Not yet, but I was wondering how it is. Have you watched it yet, and if so, what do you think?

I’ve only watched the first episode and haven’t formed any real opinion of it yet.

I’m up to season 8 of ER. That must have been around the time when I started watching it regularly because I’m starting to remember individual episodes. I particularly remember the Abby and Kovac story line (and what a jerk Romano was).

In season 7, they really doubled down on what I would describe as “themed” patients:

  • The circus is in town and the ER is full of circus performers.
  • The renaissance faire is in town and the ER is full of renaissance faire folks.
  • The sci fi convention is in town and the ER is full of elves and vulcans.
  • A prison bus crashed and the ER is full of female inmates.
  • There’s a riot at a football game and the ER is full of football players and cheerleaders.
  • There’s an accident at a rock concert and the ER is full of metalheads.

etc.
