Last year, two series had promise, “DMV” and “The Hunting Party.” I gave up on both of them after a few episodes, “DMV” because one character really was that dislikable, and “THP” because every episode was wash, rinse, repeat.
Gave up on From a couple of episodes ago. It is now a bland mess.
I’ve seen some comments in the thread saying they found Legends boring. I’ve no idea why! We are absolutely gripped by it. One episode to go.
Finished watching Nemesis on NetFlix. Lots of action and a decent storyline, but I came away unimpressed. Doubtful if I’ll watch the next season.
Search Party - season 1
Recommended.
My wife and I started Search Party. It stars Maebe…I mean Alia Shawkat. I have heard that each season of Search Party is quite different from the previous one. We liked the first season OK…and it got way better in the end.
In terms of the mystery, it’s similar in concept to a Veronica Mars style mystery(though this is a missing girl, not a dead one), but one thing I loved it the resolution. In the end we learn:
- The girl who was missing was fine. She did not need there help. Wow.
- They mysterious detective/PI was not hired by anyone; he just found a flyer
- In a way, more than one way, they are ultimately the bad guys. They achieved nothing good. Wow.
Looking forwad to season 2.
We started watching a British show called ‘Alice and Steve’ on Hulu. Stars Jemaine Clement, one of the two members of ‘Flight of the Conchords’, which my wife and I both loved. Basic premise: Jemaine’s character Steve starts having an affair with his female best friend Alice’s 26 year old daughter, enraging Alice. Hijinks and drama ensue.
Two episodes in, I guess I had vague expectations that it would be wacky and absurdist, similar to FotC, but it’s more of a dramedy than I was expecting. And what comedy there is, is along the lines of ‘cringe comedy’. So I’m still adjusting my expectations. Will keep watching.
DMV had too much “cringe” comedy.
I read 11/22/63 (Stephen King) way back when and watched the series when it first came out ten years ago. I didn’t really care for the series because I didn’t feel like did the book justice.
Well I’m watching it again (NFLX), mainly because my memory for these things is not very good, and am enjoying it.
We enjoyed “Death by Lightning” as well. Kind of wish it had been more than 4 episodes though.
I watched this at the weekend and the awkward redhead that the son dates reminded me a lot of an old friend who I haven’t spoken to for at least 3 years. The next day she suddenly messaged me!

Nostalgia. She was in London for a work thing and had ended up at the Beigel Bake on Brick Lane. Which is where I took her for lunch the last time she was in the UK 9 years ago.
She did go on to say that she thinks about me pretty regularly and enjoyed her time with me, so I think there’s some unfinished feelings there. But the main reason I haven’t spoken to her for a while is because she’d moved in with her new partner and I didn’t want to rock the boat. This could get messy, so I think I’ll leave it alone.
I really enjoyed Hamish Macbeth. It seemed to me to be a cross between Andy Griffith and Twin Peaks. Loved the quirky characters, particularly TV John. Makes me wish DJT would start smelling pomade.
About halfway through the first season of Death Valley. The lady detective is just a little ditzy but the male lead played by Timothy Spall just steals every scene he’s in. What an amazing actor. Can’t wait for Britbox to pick up season two.
Season one of Widow’s Bay on Apple TV concluded today in case anyone wants to binge it. I really enjoyed it but because they are setting up for a second season, the finale wasn’t very satisfying. This is probably the most successful mix of comedy and horror I have seen since Cabin in the Woods. The funny bits in no way blunt the scary bits.
It was great. Agree the finale was just another episode in most ways.
However, the funniest new show of the year by far.
Strokeychin Strokeychin.
If the finale was underwhelming, it would probably be because the big final twist in the episode that Ruth was Lauren’s mother and therefore Evan’s grandmother, thus making Evan a descendant of Richard Warren who presumably has to be killed to end the curse was guessed well in advance by most people discussing the show online (or, at least, the ones I saw).
I love the show too and am eagerly awaiting to see where they take it next season.

The problem I had with DMV is that it’s trying so hard to be The Office or Superstore, but unlike those shows there is no “straight man” character to be the audience stand-in to laugh at/be bewildered by all the zanniness going on around them. Every character on DMV is wacky so it’s nothing but constant silliness and stupidity.
I thought the first half of that was really good, 8/10 stuff, but the ‘twist’ as it was was pretty easy to work out, at least the general idea about it anyway. The second half tailed off a little for me and was more like 6/10. Overall an entertaining watch, bit reminiscent of The X Files.
