Last night I watched Epi 1 of Oasis on NetFlix. I had a hard time keeping up as all the various characters were introduced and the multitude of plotlines were laid out. I’ll watch another episode, but if it doesn’t get any better, I’ll bail.
I mentioned above that we’re watching A Woman of Substance, which covers a time period of six decades, starting in 1911 England. A weird thing I’ve noticed is that (so far) two of the lead men who appear in the earlier time period, who strip down for sex in a few scenes, have no body hair (other than facial and pits). That can’t have been the norm back then, right?

Seriously, there are probably two main factors involved here:
(1) Ethnic Northern Europeans in general, including Britons, tend to look less hirsute than many other white populations because their body hair is more likely to be lighter-colored and finer-textured.
(2) Late Victorian and Edwardian aesthetics of the young male body (and the female body as well) were strongly influenced by classical Greek and Roman beauty ideals, including smooth skin. (Greek and Roman men routinely scraped and plucked body hair: it was not considered beautiful to have a shaggy body “like a satyr or barbarian”.) Check out the young male nudes of the early 20th-century painter Henry Scott Tuke, for example: not a torso hair in sight.
I don’t know the series in question or what the characters you mention are supposed to be like in terms of ethnicity or age, but I’m guessing that the filmmakers are going for a look in keeping with that Edwardian beauty ideal.
It is weird that you think all men have naturally hairy bodies.

Not calling you out, and not a question that I believe is pit-level. It is just odd that you think men without body hair visible on camera are abnormal (“not the norm”). Do you think all men without heavy body hair shave it? I don’t have a trace of belly, chest, or back hair and I can assure you I’ve never shaved it. (I can just barely grow facial hair.)

From is so consistently good, it’s one of the best shows on TV. Next year, it airs its 5th and final season. If you haven’t seen it, I’d recommend a big binge of it before season 5 next summer. It’s so good. Comparisons to LOST might exist, but this show understands giving us pay-offs throughout the show.

Watched the first two episodes of The Bear season 5. End of the second episode I said “I hope the fucking restaurant explodes and kills everyone except the black folks and the latina woman” (sorry, brain fart I cannot recall her name). Then I changed my mind. I want them to be trapped inside while the restaurant slowly fills with raw sewage, an explosion death would be too quick for them and wouldn’t fit the show’s theme of moving at a snails pace.
Fuck everyone involved with making this show.
So stop watching it.
Hey, hey, negative reviews are welcome too, and the arts would be a lot duller if everybody watched and commented on only works they enjoyed. Maybe dude’s on a mission from God to watch all of The Bear whether he likes it or not. Or something.
Rogue Heroes is very enjoyable and “mostly” true. Many laughs and some tears…crazy muthafuckahs I think is appropriate.
I watched season 2 of Worst Ex Ever (4 episodes) and I’m partway through Worst Neighbor Ever (4 episodes) on Netflix. Gripping, tragic hour-long (mostly) documentaries. I also recommend Worst Roommate Ever.
i was reading a cozy mystery yest., and there was a “mystery person” reference that i didn’t “get”. a quick google search later, and i find a delightful new series to binge.

I really liked the Worst Ex and Worst Roommate Ever shows. Some truly awful, sadistic people in those shows. I had to look up Worst Neighbor Ever. I assumed I saw that one as well, but I was thinking of The Perfect Neighbor. Worst Neighbor Ever will be on my short list to watch at some point in the next week or so.
I do wish they’d back off on the AI slop. I don’t mind, at all, the cartoon-y animation these shows use for people. What I don’t like, in part because it looks…stupid, is the cartoon-y animation for people but the background (the ‘sets’) are typical ‘obvious’ AI.

Also, while I’m complaining about AI. I also don’t have any interest in watching a show where they used AI to create very realistic, but entirely fabricated ‘people’ to tell the stories of victims/witnesses that didn’t want to appear on the show. I didn’t care for, but was okay with the Morman doc I watched that deepfaked some faces, but I turned off The Investigation Of Lucy Letby about 10 minutes in.
And where do you watch it? Googling suggests it is an MGM+ show, which is a service I’ve never even heard of.
