We just finished Summer '36, a new French murder mystery miniseries, set in Nice. Four women are suspects in the murder of a prosecutor. Nicely done, if not extraordinary in its complexity.
Its cast includes Miou-Miou, and in looking her up, I found that 53 years earlier she had starred in The Mad Adventures of “Rabbi” Jacob, a 1973 French comedy I vaguely recalled as having seen before. So we watched it last night.
I really liked it too. It had kind of a “Fargo” feel, with a little touch of “Step Brothers” with the quirky bromance (and Richard Jenkins).
Late to the party as always, but I just started watching “What We Do In The Shadows” this weekend. I think it’s hilarious, but my wife bailed after three episodes and went back to watching her NCIS reruns.
It’s a very funny and pretty consistent show all the way to its ending. Have you seen the original movie? It’s great as well.

I just watched the first episode of Stuart Fails to Save the World on HBO. It’s another spinoff of The Big Bang Theory, but a wonderfully twisted spinoff. It explains that Leonard and Sheldon made a machine that opened a time portal, and the timeline of the show is where bad and weird things happen. Stuart and his geologist friend Bert are on a quest to find and fix that machine, and since this is the first episode of many, obviously something(s) goes awry. No recent show has had me laughing as much (seeing your famous magician duo juggling live rodents for cans of food: weird things happen!) It’ll be interesting to see who else from TBBT shows up, and perhaps you have to be a fan in the first place, but I’m loving it so far.
I haven’t seen this show, in fact, I didn’t know it existed until this thread, but I’m going out on a limb and assuming you’re talking about Penn and Teller (and confirmed on imdb). Is there any acknowledgment that Teller is Amy Farrah Fowler’s dad on Big Bang Theory?
They did not, but it was an alternative timeline so who knows what kind of justification they could manufacture.
He’s playing Teller; not Mr. Fowler. The scene is just a cameo spot gag. The first episode had a lot of funny apocalypse jokes like this. I suspect that’s not the setting of the whole season. I’m guessing it’ll be more a variation of Bill & Ted.
I know I’m extremely late to the party, but I recently binged Season 1 of The PItt.
Great, great show. I’m still amazed as to how they filmed the chaotic episodes in the aftermath of the mass shooting.
Looking forward to bingeing Season 2.

It’s based on the novel Gone Tomorrow, the 13th Reacher novel of the series, all written by Lee Child.

I had to Google “schlocky meaning.” (cheap, poorly made, low in quality, tacky, trashy, and/or derivative). But your “one … after another” almost implies that you – like me – indulge in the schlock.
His latest Netflix hit is I will find you – this show has the 2nd-highest IMDB rating among the Coben minis but it is so drenched in schlock it may cure me of this perverse addiction! It isn’t even quite bad enough to be “camp.” Yet, captivated by the suspense and plot twists, I admit I’ll probably watch this miniseries all the way to the end.
It “jumps the shark” about 8 or 9 times per episode! Is that a record?
I won’t spoiler the show – in case someone wants to see for themselves how bad a detective thriller can be – but as an example of their compulsion to jerk the viewer around, one scene appears with the title “Geneva, Switz. // Five Years Ago.” BUT there is a 3-second pause between the place and the date. Why delay the date? They couldn’t pass up a chance to jerk the viewer a smidgen more!
I’m actually kinda hooked on this bit of silliness. The acting isn’t bad and the characters are likeable enough. There is enough real Navy dialog going on and proper weapons handling happening to tell me that they’ve got a good military advisor for the series and they listened to him/her. All the last second drama is schlocky, of course, but it’s entertaining.
I really enjoyed the first episode. To me, it wasn’t really laugh-out-loud funny, but I had a big grin on my face throughout most of it. Wonderfully twisted.
I just wish I hadn’t watched the commercial first, which contained a number of spoilers. Then I read a couple of small spoilers here in this thread.
Then yesterday, the Apple News headlines on my phone had a big spoiler for episode two. Dammit, not everyone watches streaming shows on the day they come out!
The Offer
A ten-part one off (not so mini) series chronicling the making of The Godfather, told through the eyes of the producer Al Ruddy.
I’d heard this was good and it didn’t disappoint. Is it slow-paced? Yes. Could they have told the story in half a dozen rather than ten episodes? Probably. Was it ever boring? Absolutely not.
I am now very much wanting to read more about this, just to see how true to life this amazing tale really was. Some of it seems too over the top to be but who knows! I recently read Al Pacino’s autobiography and although it obviously covers far more than just The Godfather, it does mention dealings with certain shady characters, so it wouldn’t surprise me if most of this really did happen.

We started watching ‘Furious’ on Hulu (I think it’s a Hulu original). It stars Emmy Rossum (Fiona from ‘Shameless’) as an ex-cop turned FBI agent who liaisons with the NYPD to try to catch a killer who was trafficked as an underage girl and now, as a young adult, is seducing and killing all the men who had paid to have sex with her as a teen.
A few episodes in, it’s a pretty decent watch. Seems more ‘psychological exploration of emotionally damaged characters’ than ‘mystery - thriller - police procedural’ though; Emmy Rossum’s character carries a lot emotional baggage.
Speaking of Rossum, it’s good to see her working. I hadn’t seen much of her since she left Shameless. She was the heart and soul of that show. I think it’s shameless that Emmy never won an Emmy for ‘Shameless’.
