Series you've recently watched, are now watching or have given up on

I’m trying to make my way through Stranger Things season 4, but I can’t remember who most of these people are anymore. I definitely don’t remember all the back stories, so I don’t get all the inside jokes.

And Winona Ryder has to be one of the worst actors of all time. I’m not sure I’ll hang in for anymore.

Currently working my way through 9-1-1: Lone Star, otherwise known as Disaster Porn: Southern Style. Besides the obligatory redneck firefighter (married to a Woman of Color), there’s a Muslim woman firefighter, a black trans firefighter, a gay paramedic in a steady relationship with a gay cop and battling opiod addiction, a Hispanic DACA with dyslexia, and all headed by Rob Lowe as the metrosexual captain with anger-management issues. Now that’s entertainment.

Recently finished watching all of Naked & Afraid, like ALL of it; the original series, the XL seasons, the solo web series, the dubbed foreign episodes, everything, and have moved on to Alone, but now I keep getting confused that they’re wearing clothes.

Yeah, I’m all for representation but 911:LS goes completely OTT.

In the first episode where we meet the “Hispanic DACA” (along with the rest of the crew) I said to the spouse “He’s going to have some sort of disability. But not one that will disqualify him from being a firefighter. Betcha he’s dyslexic.” Nailed it.

Yeah, pretty much. I confess to a mild crush on the Muslim woman. Cutie. The character is a bit of a lens-louse, with a huge IG following. This is bitten her in the ass at least once.

I admit to rolling my eyes at the ridiculousness of the disasters affecting the Austin area, like the volcano opening up on a college campus, or the extended cold freeze that had ponds iced over for days on end. (I know that Texas really did suffer a cold freeze but I don’t think it was nearly as bad as shown.)

Like I said, Disaster Porn. The L.A. show has been hit with, amongst other things, major earthquakes, a tsunami, a city-wide blackout caused by hacker terrorists, and an abandoned oil well opening up under an urban street. Anybody allergic to Irwin Allen movies, back away slowly.

This may or may not be slightly off the topic intended by the OP because I don’t know if it’s being broadcast (or has ever been) but the ABC television network and ABC7 in New York are both sponsors. I know it only as a YouTube series.

Anyway, I accidentally stumbled across a video about black holes in general and the Event Horizon Telescope project in particular. I thought I’d just watch a few minutes, but I was immediately impressed by the quality of the speaker, and then he introduced his guest, Sheperd Doeleman, who is the founding director of the EHT, and was equally impressed by the quality of the questions and discussion.

Well, no wonder. The speaker in question was Brian Greene, and this was part of a great series called the World Science Festival. Highly recommended. More info here:

Finished season two of “Hacks”, which was very good. Jean Smart is such a great actor.

We’ve watched five of the ten episodes of The First Lady on Showtime.

Three intertwining stories focusing on Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson).

They’re all very interesting, and the performances are excellent. I think, though, that it’s somewhat less compelling than it could have been. There’s a lack of narrative focus, and while jumping back and forth in time is inevitable when covering three different eras, even the segments about each specific First Lady are not presented in chronological order.

The result feels kind of disjointed overall. I wish the storytelling were tighter, but it’s worth watching for the three leads. We’ll definitely finish it out. If they do another season with different First Ladies, I’m not sure if we’ll do that.

We’ve moved on to S3 of “Barry” and liking it a lot. It’s very dark humor sometimes, but thoroughly enjoyable. The scenes with the bomb were hysterical. “Try turning of your wi-fi.”

I really wished they were able to order it so that the chase in Episode 6 was the season closer. That was the high point of the entire series for me.

You’re not wrong about that, but the subsequent denouement was quite compelling.

Still enjoying “The Old Man”, with it’s very strong cast and good writing. And I finally slogged through the end of S4 of “Stranger Things”. Way too much exposition throughout, IMO.

Huh. I’m only halfway through season 1, but so far I like it as an arch bit of historical fiction. Well-acted by the principals and a good subject background to work with. De gustibus and all that, I suppose.

A three part mini-series:

Really interesting doc. I didn’t know anything about it, but it turns out the family is really prominent, having had several generations serving as lawyers. Wikipedia says:

The Murdaugh family is a prominent legal family in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina in the United States. From 1920 to 2006, three members of the family consecutively served as solicitor (i.e. district attorney), in charge of prosecuting all criminal cases in the state’s 14th circuit district, leading locals to call the five-county district “Murdaugh Country”. The family also founded a nationally influential civil litigation law firm in Hampton, South Carolina.

After building that reputation, it seems to have been trashed. There are plenty of twists and turns. I highly recommend.

And it looks like the hits keep coming:

“The Night Of” on HBOMAX, excellent! Highly recommend. Turturro is amazing.

Yeah, it’s excellent… although NOT a happy show. Very grim and depressing.

Not, but so well done, I am shocked I had barely heard a peep about it prior to watching

Two more episodes of Dark Winds for this season. It’s been renewed for a second-six-episode season. We’re still enjoying it, but the Navajo people? Apparently not so much. From the series’ Wikipedia page: “The Navajo Times criticized the series for lacking authenticity in its representation of Navajo people and language.”

We just watched the most recent episode today and right away recognized the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, the exterior as well as the interior with its “miracle” staircase (although they do not trust in the miracle enough to let you set foot on it).
