We’re watching the latest season of The Crown. Well acted, as usual, if a bit plodding. It really points out what a bunch of useless gits much of British royalty are.
We watched The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself and really enjoyed it. It’s about a kid who’s been treated like shit his whole life because of who his father is. The setting is a magical version of our world, so if fantasy’s not your thing the show is not for you. It definitely feels grittier and more human than a lot of “mundane” shows.
Sounds interesting. Where is it?
Netflix.
Thanks!
The Wrong Mans, Matthew Baynton, James Corden (Hulu). Two knuckleheads get themselves into an unintended mess. Amusing.
I see that the last season of Dead to Me (Christina Applegate, Linda Cardinelli) has dropped on Netflix, which is great. We’ve enjoyed the past seasons.
I quite liked The Wrong Mans although Corden’s shtick can get grating.
Finished Season 4 of Young Sheldon which has just popped up on Netflix. Still enjoying it more than I did Big Bang Theory.
I am about to finish watching Goliath.
This has to be one of my all-time favorite shows. I just love the stories, the acting, and the cinematography.
I know people have complained about the increased weirdness in the later seasons, but that is the best part for me. Kind of a legal version of Twin Peaks, but less Lynchian indulgence.
I agree.
Zootopia+ / Zootropolis+ - A series of shorts set in the same universe and featuring the same characters as the film, on Disney+. If you liked the film, you’ll like these. If you didn’t like the film, you are unlikely to like these. If you didn’t see the film, you will be very confused.
Checking in here semi-annually…
For no particular reason, I decided to watch Community again from the beginning. This is the only half-hour comedy I’ve ever done this with. I still think the first three seasons are some of the absolute best writing/acting/directing the sitcom format has ever seen, the non-Dan Harmon season is passable as TV but is glaringly missing most of what makes the show work, and season five is pretty good but doesn’t quite scale the heights of the early years. I’m almost finished the final, Yahoo streaming, season, and I’m really noticing how it’s filmed in such a way that it almost seems a completely different genre of television. Something about this run of eps is glossier and lit more brightly, and it no longer feels like a half-hour comedy anymore. It’s still funnier than almost anything else on the tube, but the broad stuff is reeeeeeeally broad, Abed’s character is so notably different than he was in any previous season (Danny Pudi seems to have dropped every ASD tic and replaced it with happy expressiveness), and Chang is still onscreen about ten times as often as he needs to be.
We just started ‘1899’, which we picked solely because it comes from the people who made ‘Dark’ which we really liked.
So far, an interesting, creepy show. A woman wakes up on a ship in 1899, and strangeness ensues. That’s about all we know about it so far.
We are on the second-last episode of the last season of “The Blacklist”. It’s amazing that this show has lasted so long, and it’s pretty much entirely due to the acting of James Spader. The story itself goes all over the place and barely makes sense.
We also finished season 2 of “The Great”. I love this show. It’s not even close to being historical anymore, and they admit that right in the opening. More of an alt-history perhaps. But every episode is entertaining.
We gave up, but you’re right James Spader is amazing. The story makes no sense, but the show is enjoyable anyway. I hope he finds something interesting to do next. He’s one of my must watch actors now.
We’re watching NOS4A2. The acting is top notch, but the story drags a bit. I think a mini-series rather than 2 full seasons would have been a better choice. I can see Stephen King’s influence all over. Joe Hill, the author of the book the show is based on, is Stephen’s son.
Well, I think the Blacklist has been renewed again (TEN seasons!), so I guess he’s not going anywhere yet. The new season drops in Feb 2023.
Good grief. What’s next - aliens?
Have just caught up on this, and I agree. Constance in particular remains a delight, although the character only works because it’s set against the other three kids and assorted adults. Tony Hale deserves some sort of award for his dual role here as well.
I also imagine the actors playing Jackson and Jillson must spend a lot of time corpsing at each other (“I treasure you”).
Gave Up On:
The Walking Dead
Survivor
The Goldbergs
The Conners*
Still Watching
Anne Rice’s Interview With The Vampire
What We Do In The Shadows
Bob Hearts Abishola
Home Economics
Young Sheldon
Ghosts
Derry Girls
The Amazing Race**
*I ditched The Conners not because of any frustration with the internal politics or whatever. I just realized one day that I had like eight episodes saved on my DVR and no desire to watch any of them.
**I haven’t yet officially ditched The Amazing Race, but at this point all I do is fast-forward through it waiting for something interesting or exciting. I only still “watch” because my mother loves discussing it with me.
True Detective: Season 2
Loved it to the point where I dedicated much of my Saturday to binge watching it… and I never do that. 3 episodes into season 3 and enjoying it even more.
Season 2? We watched a few episodes and got bored and/or irritated. I loved season 1, so I had high hopes. I disliked it so much I’ll probably skip this season 3 you speak of.
Lol. Well, this is more a recommendation (or not) thread and not a critique thread, but I was very irritated by McConaughey’s character. And I understand I am in the minority in this position. NBD.
