Seriously, twickster?

This is what we call a hijack. Please stick to the topic of the thread. If you have a complaint or question about Miller’s moderation, please start a thread about it. This one is already about something else. Here is the OP:
In a Cafe Society thread about the sexual assault . . . . Twickster comes in, accepts Larry Borgia’s apology, then throws the exact same insult at devilsknew and tells him to take his questions elsewhere.
And folks, if we engage them, the hijackers win.

Please don’t continue the hijack. No warnings issued.

It’s good that you’re so forgiving. Most people are not.

You screw up once, you apologize and all is good. You screw up twice, you apologize and all is okay. You screw up seven, eight, and nine times, well, what we start having is a trend.

If this were the first time twickster’s modding actions had been questioned, then nobody would be calling for her removal. However, she’s developed a reputation around here.

Let me ask you: How many times would a surgeon have to screw up before “sorry” doesn’t cut it anymore?

The apologies aren’t spontaneously forthcoming, either. They have to be wheedled out of her. I don’t think a regular poster would be given as much leeway as she is.

A regular poster almost certainly would have a warning if not a suspension or two under their belt with a similar history.

Point of clarification, please. Is that rape, or just sexual assault. What about if it were sustained and brutal?

I admit, it is a poor choice of words, but truly sincere and real… not punched up.

Mods/Admins: Do y’all have a way of regulating yourselves?

For instance, how many unanswerable charges against an admin/mod will result in you asking someone to step down???

Are y’all omnipotent?

Of course you aren’t, and neither are we.

Is there a limit to our apologies before we’re erased from SDMB?

Not the last time I looked.

So why should it apply to Twicks?

So what, if an “I was wrong” has to be “pulled out” of her?

She’s just one more human person being human, and I think we have to allow for that.

Just like we have to allow for it in all of us.

They moderate. They don’t dictate.

But let’s be democratic, shall we?

You don’t like 'em?

Vote 'em out!

But Jesus Christ on a sidecar, who wants this fucking job?

For no money.

And heaps of abuse.

At who knows at what cost to one’s psyche?

I’d be outta here so fast, your head wouldn’t just swim! I’d take it with me!

In conclusion, rip 'em a new one in the proper place (maybe a new segment in the lineup).

Nominate someone to take the place of the mod/admin you can’t stand (done every 2 years, democratic way)

Or shut the fuck up and realize that “There but for the grace of Og, goes my dumb ass.”

I think it’s a very tough job, y’all.

You know I love you guys with all my heart, and I lose a little brain power as time goes by, right?

Just think about it, okay?

Q

You mean you, yourself, and you consider inappropriate?

In defense of twickster, she (I’m 90% sure she’s a she) is very busy in her work and moderating is not an easy job, and sometimes she will make a post that she will later regret because she is tired. Remember that in most cases moderating is unpaid, thankless work and everyone appreciates some semblance of order to have a civil discussion.

Also, note that mods are not to be held to the same standards as users. If a mod breaks a forum rule, that is not a hand-wringing moment. Like cops who have to run a red light to catch a criminal, they have immunity against most “laws” that everyone else has to abide by to keep order.

I somewhat disagree with this. Mods should be held to a somewhat higher standard. In twickster’s case, she did fully blow a rule by insulting Devilsknew outside of the Pit. She knew she was out of line as a poster without her mod hat, much less within her official capacity. Not only are they there to make sure the rules are followed, they are expected to lead by example.

That’s not to say they’re perfect. It’s perfectly reasonable to make allowances for tiredness or for having a bad day. It’s not reasonable to hold them to lesser standards than regular members, though.

Having said that, twicks has apologized and admitted she shouldn’t have said what she did. It was a fully human mistake. I’m sure she’s not about to be issued her walking papers. I am a mod on another message board which shall be unnamed, and I fully appreciate how tough the job is. I wouldn’t moderate the Dope if they paid me Jack Black’s weight in platinum. I think she should be cut some slack, and I’m probably biased, but I don’t think she deserves for people to keep piling on her. And I’m sure she’s not dwelling on it anymore. I would move on, too.

I think you’ll find that this is what is getting most people’s backs up. Most people believe mods *should *be held to the same standards. I’ve always believed that they should be expemplars of those standards. I don’t think your analogy holds water, either. Are you really saying that because a poster swore at someone, it’s OK for twickster to swear back with impunity?

Quasimodem, with all due respect, you’re starting to ramble and it’s hard to follow what you’re saying. One thing I will respond with is that I’m pretty sure any threads calling to vote on mod firings would be immediately closed and deleted.

This is always the chief argument by mod apologists on this board. If a mod doesn’t have the time to be a mod, then they need to resign and let someone who does have the time take over. Being “busy” is no excuse for poor moderation and is certainly no excuse for breaking board rules.

We’ve all heard before, “Being a mod is a thankless job, it’s so hard and you put up with a ton of crap for nothing in return, etc., etc.” Sure, I wouldn’t want to read every single page in every single thread of a forum either. But this hardly makes mods martyrs. If the job’s too tough, they always have the option of stepping down with no hard feelings.

Oh, please. This is a weak argument and you know it. Insulting a poster outside of the pit with your mod hat is not necessary to enforce the rules here. Being an exemplar poster, however, is.

Are there a lot of people lining up for what is essentially a volunteer position that requires eating lots of shit from anonymous posters on the internet?

I knew a guy that was in really good shape and very disciplined about keeping in good shape.

He got a job as a personal trainer and lost every client he ever got within a week. he was a nice guy but he simply wasn’t a good personal trainer despite being religious about working out.

I don’t know, but you only get the shit if you behave in a way that warrants it. Do it occasionally, and you’ll get a pass. Do it frequently, and you get shit.

Are you saying that the quality standard has to be low because there isn’t anyone else available?

It’s the same thing with us posters. The mods have said before that if a poster makes a few mistakes spread out over a few years, they will be more lenient than with someone who makes the same number of mistakes over a few days.

This. twickster as a poster was always a fave of mine. I have been very disappointed in her modding skills.

And that’s how it should be. Goose and gander.

There are several posters that have expressed interest in this forum on wanting to be a mod. I say screw 'em - give it to the posters who least want to be bothered with it and will bring back a manhattan style to the proceedings.

This. If twickster were a poster and not a mod she would have been warned several times and probably suspended for her repeated poor behaviour.

Any chance Ed or TubaDiva will weigh in? I’d like to know the administration’s take.
