I guess I should clarify what I meant by “sharing” a lawyer. We could not afford two lawyers. We agreed on everything but did not have the time or knowledge to do the paperwork ourselves. I asked a lawyer from my church to do the paperwork. She gave me a very good deal on her fee, which my husband paid. She made it very clear to both of us that technically she was MY attorney, but that he was paying, and that if we disagreed on anything she would be taking my side. He wanted this all done in a hurry, and he was more than willing to pay since we got a discount. She also made it very clear to him that the discount was for MY benefit, not his, and that he was damned lucky to get such a deal. A year or two later, he hired his own attorney to try and get a few things changed with regards to which child he got to claim on his taxes. I honestly do not remember how we resolved that, except I got my way and didn’t have to get a lawyer.
