I was recently asked by a friend to help him with a computer problem.
He and his wife are Thai immigrants, with limited English. They are both computer novices. They have a seven-year-old daughter, whose English is somewhat better. They want her to speak English as much as possible.
They recently bought a very nice Toshiba laptop, which came loaded with Windows XP (in English). The daughter is learning to use the computer very quickly.
Last week, my friend told me he had obtained a Thai-language keyboard and Thai-language version of Windows. He asked me if I could set their laptop up so that it’s switchable from Thai to English – this way, he and his wife could email their relatives back in Thailand, and their daughter could do her homework in English, all on the same computer.
This sounds like it could get tricky – could anyone offer advice and things to watch out for? TIA.
