Seventeen hours left on my free Rhapsody trial -- who should I listen to?

Need answers fast! Who should I listen to to get the most of the time I have left?

Jellyfish. It’s my stock answer for any “what should I listen to” question. Awesome band.

Nice call on Jellyfish–giving them a shot and like what I’m hearing.

My fallback vote: Betty Davis. Not that crappy 80s song about her eyes, the Mrs. Betty Davis, funk queen and Miles ex-wife.

Sultry funk.
Watch out for remixes that try and add to perfection.

Glad you like them! They only put out two studio albums, but they had enough backlog to fill a greatest hits album and a 4 cd box set (I have both). Also, the various players are incredibly prolific musicians, so there is a TON of other music available out there from them. Let me know if you want any suggestions.

I am a huge Jellyfish nerd.

Thanks, I will try both your suggestions next. In theory I have until midnight. I’ve spent much of the day listening to the Gypsy Kings, whose music I find really compelling even though I can only understand or word or two of Spanish.

Here’s a Latin suggestion that will knock your socks off. For some reason it’s a bit tricky to find in Rhapsody (or at least my attempts have gone wonky).

Put Cico Mangual into the search box. That should find a song on an album named Tambo by a band named Paracumbe. Putting either the album or band in seems to lead now where.

They’re decidedly not the Gypsy Kings, but their groove is addictive.

I can’t imagine living without Rhapsody.

… Use that time to download Spotify. Same type of service but free for now.

Rhapsody’s search service is awful.

I’ll look into Spotify. What’s the catch? How do they money?

Check out Ozomatli, if you haven’t already…

Cold War Kids

Supposedly the free service won’t always be free although they’ve backed away from that. They do some ads (like 30 seconds every 10 or so songs). And they offer and frequently pitch a for-pay service exactly like Rhapsody.

ETA: just to establish my bona fides, I cancelled my Rhapsody service after trying Spotify. I think they both have their advantages and disadvantages but Spotify wins out by being free at this point.

If you like Gypsy Kings, and enjoy instrumental music, try Rodrigo y Gabriela and Ottmar Lieber.

If you want something a little different with beautiful vocals, try Active Child and School of Seven Bells.

For more mainstream choices, Gotye is really catchy, and Lindsey Buckingham’s last album is amazing.

Sorry to double post. I’ve also had good luck with music map. Put in the name of a band you like, and get names of similar bands. I’ve made a couple of good finds that way.

By the way, here’s some random recommendations:

Charles Bradley - The World is going up in Flames

Amadou & Mariam - Ce N’est Pas Bon

Drive-by Truckers - Used to be a Cop
