There was a career day at a local junior high school and I was at a table in the gymnasium with my education reporter (she was after all the one who volunteer the paper). A group of girls came over to our table and I noticed they had colored plastic braclets made out of plastic cord (I guess you’d call it) Some had pink, some had blue, some had pink, blue and red, etc.
I asked about it and they giggled and turned away and at about that time my reporter threw an elbow into my rib cage, which apparently is her subtle way of telling her editor to shut up.
Later she told me that the braclets are ways high school and especially junior high girls announce what sexual activities they have done. One color means kissing, one color means sex, one means oral sex, one means anal, etc.
My reporter said she has been trying to do a story about it but can find no one to go on the record.
I was just wondering, has anyone else noted this or is it just around here.
I’ve heard about it, it wasn’t the style while I was in school. Though I did have a girl offer me the tabs off her coke as a sort of sexual token. I never used it.
The bracelets were covered on the news here a few months ago I think. shrug Didn’t really pay any attention to it.
Honestly, it’s just like the old fucktabs back in my junior high days. That’s what everyone says they mean, but nobody actually follows through on it or uses them in the way they say. It’s just harmless fun.
Yeah, I remember those from middle school, and also the pop can tab thing. Its just one of those things that parents blew way out of proportion. I (or anyone else that I know) never did anything sex related because of the bracelets or pop tabs. It was just “cool” I guess because it was semi-rebellious and a way to freak out your parents a little bit. I really don’t think kids take it seriously.
I had never heard of the bracelet fad until it was included in a recent episode of “Law & Order: SVU.”
I’m inclined to think that, if anything, the urban legend has CREATED a trend that didn’t really exist before. That is, a few years ago, girls who wore such bracelets were just trying to look cool. But now that they think the bracelets have sexual connotations, they may wear a bunch of the “naughtier” colors as a goof, as a way of teasing boys, or as a way of twitting authority.
here (austraila) they used to be only black. They were worn by older teenagers (normally girls) If someone broke yours (you only wore one or two) you had to have sex with them. Now younger girls wear them and don’t actually do it (and now boys don’t wear them at all). Now it is just a kid’s fashion (that is where the colours came in [here] a lot of them don’t even know what it means.
Fuckbands? Yeah, some people wear them and usually get disdain poured on them for doing so. You’re supposed to be given them by whoever you did whatever with, but regardless of what I’ve done I’ve never gotten any, maybe I’m just not good enough They’re usually black over here (England) although I haven’t seen any in about a year… the nearest thing I’ve seen is a rubber ring my girlfriend has, but that’s something else…
