In this thread in the Pit, a poster unknowingly linked to a site with porn pop-ups. His link was removed, and my post asking a (supposedly humourous) question about the pop-ups was also removed. It had never occurred to me before that the SDMB had rules regarding porn links, pop-ups, or what have you, but now I’m curious about what those rules are. People use a lot of sexual talk and innuendos here, sometimes getting pretty explicit, and I’m also curious to know where the line is regarding the sex stuff.
(Not that I’m planning on doing anything porn-related on the boards; I just don’t want to inadvertently contribute to something against the rules again.)
Here’s the relevant portion of the user agreement.
Sex talk and innuendo is okay (in the proper forums); how explicit it may be is a case-by-case call made by the forum moderator. If we receive e-mail from other members who happen to find it offensive, or just too much, we’ll probably step in and put a stop to it. Also, as London_Calling has stated, we do not allow links to porn sites, or sites with porn pop-ups.
The general idea is that you want to avoid giving folks an unpleasant surprise when they click on one of your links, whether it’s a triple-X rated porn site, or whether it’s just something “bad” like a photo of a deformed baby.
For one thing, we do have a certain contingent of under-18 posters, and we want them to have to go look up their own damn pornography, on Google or something, instead of having it handed to them on a Straight Dope silver platter, so to speak.
Generally speaking, you don’t want to post a direct link to porn stuff. If for purposes of the dicussion in a thread, you want people to go look at a particular porn website, you can say something like, “I’m not going to post a link, but you can find it by putting ‘[whatever]’ into Google…”
And if for purposes of a discussion you need to post a link to a really “bad” picture, like of a deformed baby or a car wreck or a bit of penis enhancement surgery that went wrong, it’s a good idea to warn people. “Here’s a link to what I’m talking about. WARNING: It’s pretty gross.” Then folks know what they’re in for, which is the whole idea.
Don’t ever post something like a mere one-line OP, “What is going on in this picture?” and then just put a link to a photo of “bad” stuff, without explaining what it’s going to be.
Most workplaces frown on time wasting internet surfing in general. I make few e-mails and occasionally check out the local skate site for events, and that’s all.
One question was answered, but the other one seemes to be ignored. Why was Featherlou’s reply removed. Not seeing it, I can not guess the answer, but a humorous reply does not seem out of line, even if the humor was not great.
As stated: “His link was removed, and my post asking a (supposedly humourous) question about the pop-ups was also removed.” What was the “supposedly humourous” reply and why was it removed.
Yeah, it’s sort of like personal phone calls. MOST places of business will allow you to make a quick call every now and then, but they do have this odd idea that you should be engaged in making money for them while you’re on the clock.
And yes, a warning if the site has sound would be nice, too.
Ah, that all makes sense. Thanks for the info, everybody. For the record, my deleted supposedly humourous post was just asking a why one of the pop-up girls had a censored blur by her ear; all the other girls had censored blurs by their mouths. Curious to know if this was a sexual position that I had never heard about, you know.
(ps - Unclaimed Fright, I just realized that the title sounded like that, too! )
