Along the same lines, I remember seeing a show somewhere (sorry, don’t remember what show or where) that says the correct way to approach a Frenchman for directions or help is to say (in French, of course) “Pardon me, I’m sorry to bother you, but <insert question>”
Here in the US, we ususally just say, “Excuse me, could you tell me where is the closest pub?”, but Frenchman like you to apologize for bothering them as well.
That was actually in my * In Touch * this week, but I can’t think of what it was off the top of my head.
Anyway, I had hoped up until Sunday night that Carrie would stay with the Russian. BUT, after Sunday’s episode I am hoping she ends up with Big.
The fact that HE was willing to meet with her 3 friends (who he’s shied away from in the past) to basically ask permision to go after her really held water with me.
I DO NOT blame her for venting at him on the street in front of her apartment, but she did calm down, and tell Miranda that she wondered what it would be like to be in Paris with BIG.
And I too loved it when Miranda said “Go get our girl.”
I guess I am in the minority. I thought Miranda was INCREDIBLY selfish to tell Big to go to Paris. This is a man who has strung Carrie along for years, has continually disappointed her, lied to her, cheated on his wife with her, run from her at every chance, and Miranda wants her supposed best friend to end up with him? Selfish, selfish, selfish. All because Miranda doesn’t want her little world to change any more than moving to Brooklyn has already changed it.
Of course Carrie is homesick. She moved to another country, she doesn’t know anyone, and it has been ONE week. And Miranda with her “Come home!” Grow up Miranda, why not try supporting your friend instead of feeding your own selfish needs? How about, “Oh Carrie, I know it must be hard moving to another country but it has only been a week, just give it a little time and remember we love you”?
As to why Carrie called from a pay phone, maybe she got a look at the phone rates at the Athênée - only a complete idiot would call from the room when she can get a phone card for a few dollars.
If she “ends up with” Big, it will be for about a month. Then he’ll get cold feet again or cheat on HER with someone else. He is the type who wants what he wants when it’s convenient for him. I’m disgusted that her friends would encourage him for one second.
Thank you. I don’t care that much about how everything ends but I was so damn happy last night when Carrie called Big on all his shit. About damn time.
Amen sister! I was thrilled to see the character growth in Samantha and greatly disappointed in the selfish nature of Miranda the last couple weeks. To be honest, I’ve been disappointed in Miranda since she got pregnant. It seems ever since then, she has been so incredibly self-focused and just snooty. Then, to recommend Big go “get our girl” or whatever was just the icing on the cake. This is the woman who told Carrie once that if she gets back with Big to not come crying to her when he does what he always does. Now, she’ll see her friend back in another dysfunctional mess with Big if it means her needs are met and she will have her friend back. Pathetic Miranda, really pathetic.
On Carrie, Mrs. MeanJoe and I both cheered (literally!) when she finally told Big off on the street last week. Our feeling was that she finally stopped being a damn victim and stood up for herself and showed a little self-respect to not be used and manipulated. Then, to have that phone call to Miranda from Paris was just so… disappointing. Carrie is uncomfortable in a new environment so she immediately falls back into the self-destructive “Big” thing because it is comfortable. Pathetic Carrie, really pathetic.
Well, I like Big, even though he’s been a heel at times. People can change, mature, wise up. I like that Carrie told him off, but she can also forgive him. Jayzuz, she’s still obviously in love with him…even though the Russian is a nice guy, their romance just doesn’t have the same spark.
I had forgotten about that. You’re right, Miranda told her many times that she was an idiot for being with this man who treats her like shit. Carrie has ALWAYS supported Miranda’s choices; why Miranda cannot do the same I don’t know. I agree that true friends should be able to tell each other what they really think, but there comes a time that the disapproving person has to say, “Well, I don’t agree with your choice to move to Paris and I don’t like this man you’re with, but you keep telling me you are doing the right thing for you so I will support you in whatever way I can.”
I don’t think Carrie is in love with Big. She’s in love with fucking Big. That’s what they have in common: good sex. And he’ll never change: he said he “loved” her a year ago too, and that they belonged together, and then poof, as usual, he disappeared.
I dunno, I must be in the minority in thinking that Petrovsky(a.k.a. “The Russsian”) is not as great and “nice” as several have pointed him out to be.
I mean, his whole attitude about this move of Carrie’s has been
[russian mode]
You come with me to France, yes?
You will make other friends when you get there, yes?
[/russian mode]
I’m sorry, Carrie definitely COULD have used a vacation in France, but to move there indefinitely with no prior knowledge was expecting a LOT from her…and he seems way too distracted with his exhibit(or whatever).
As far as her reuniting with Big, I’m all for it. If he goes halfway around the world to find her he’s looking for something a little more than just a one night stand.
To me the perfect finale would be for them to reunite, go back to NYC and her to ask him if he pormises to behave and love her and stay with her and him replying “Abso-fucking-lutely”!
That’s what I think. From what we saw Sunday, he didn’t even meet her at the airport, for crying out loud!
And then when she left him and his daughter to go up to the room, he just told her the room number, and had an attitude of, “See you later.” I would have expected him to walk her up to the room and show her around.
If I was moving to Paris to be with the guy, I would have expected him to meet me at the damn airport!
I’ve also heard the “Three Different Endings” bit, and can only think of the following three:
Big asks her to move back, but she stays in Paris with Petrovsky.
Big asks her to move back and marry him and she accepts.
Big asks her to move back and marry him, and she does move back, but doesn’t marry him. She decides being the Happy Single Gal in New York is what she really likes after all.
I say Number 3 is what will happen. Sarah Jessica Parker has said there are plans for a SaTC movie in the future, and I can see them continuing each character’s storylines in a movie.
He’s got NO sense of humor, none WHATSOEVER. He treats her like a child.
That whole espresso machine thing – he criticizes her for not having one and basically forces her to buy one. She stuck trying to put it together and doesn’t even want it in the first place.
Their first day in Paris, she doesn’t know the people, the places, the language, and he totally shafted her, and then basically tries to buy her happiness with that necklace, and then completely ignores her again after his friends show up.
HEY! This guy is a prick, people.
And, she doesn’t love him anyway. She finally made the decision to go to Paris with him after seeing “Third rock” lady fall out the window and Murphy Brown settling for Wallace Shawn.
And, she didn’t use a “lame ass little cute act” on the daughter – she was being herself. That daughter is clearly a stuck up little bitch which is going to make life even worse.
Anyway, the actors always make a big point about how the show has made it OK for women to be single and all 3 of the others are tied up with men, so I hope Big shows up and she realizes she doesn’t need either one of those men and starts having a little fun in paris by HERSELF before going back to NYC.
I hope she ditches Petrovsky in the most embarrasing manner possible.
You’re probably right. That’s why I hate that character so much. She should act like an adult, not a self absorbed shoe buying jr. high schooler giggling about the cute guy across the hall. Give me Miranda any day.
Maybe it would be best if she went back to New York, hung out with Big, and postponed the marriage thing. That way, when the movie comes out, it can be about her wedding preparation – which could be very boring, actually. Maybe we’d be better off if she got into it with Big again. Then he could leave, she could do the single thing, and then Big could resurface during the movie and they could get all cozy again.
