SF Holiday Dopefest Party Thread

Wah Hoo! We are partying in a most excellent style. Massive quantities of the precious amber fluid, marnagritas and tequila are flowing even as we type.

Five kinds of salsa, live music and lots of dopers are hanging in fine fettle. We now have dueling guitars with the occasional flute solo courtesy of moi.

Soon begins the massive Mexican food feast with the mui authentico Chile de Guaillo (no beans and no tomato, see the recipe thread), guacamole and fresh made tortillas that are about six hours old. Time to chow down!

Gonna whup out the saxamaphone and bring down the house in a little while, then on to the electric guitar!

Digital photos will be posted in short order as soon as CAMSTER fires up the camera.

Stay tuned, bytes at eleven…

Well. I’m here, so the party can officially start. Unfortunately I have to leave soon to go to an oat party with Rasa. So the party must sadly end.
I must say that Zenster makes very good salsa, especially his habenero!

Um, he means BOAT party. Not OAT. BOAT. With a B. But we’ll excuse him.

I like these people. They’re cool!

The people are cool and the food is good but there’s no cookies here. How can i like a party when there’s no cookies???

No…I definetely meant Oat. I’m pretty sure Rasa would not voluntarily come to an Oat party, so I told her it was a boat party. zyzz is coming too. We’re hoping to find him some cookies there. Oatmeal maybe?

Have fun you guys! Sorry psycat and I couldn’t make it. We want pictures!

You know what the strange thing about habanero salsa? It looks remarkably like mango salsa. Holy shit! Not wuite the same. I took a big nacho full and my head just about exploded.

By the way I must comment on just how cute a couple oldscratch and Rasa are. It’s so sweet.

More Beer! I must have more beer!

I’m here! I’m queer! I don’t want any more beers! Except I’m not queer and I do want more beers. Forgive me. I’m drunk as a Tibetan monk.

Loving it except for Zenster’s favorite hot sauce.
Gaaa Gaaaa Waaater Pleeeze!

Well, the party progresses. We are chowing on the taco and assorted food like objects.

Man, did we screw up. Oldscratch , Rasa and zyzzyxzyzyzyzyyyz, or (however you spell it) were here, then blew us off for an Oat Party (whatever that is - incedentally, dragging SeaDiver off with them), and we never asked them what these mystery presents provided by Nymysys were.
I followed that whole weird Q&A behind the use of said presents secure in the fact that I’d find our what they were tonight. But, noooooooo. They took off without telling us.

What the hell were those presents?!?!?!

Right now the people downstairs are singing Yellow Submarine, sounding very much like a bunch of people who have been drinking for a while!

Food was fabulous, followed by even more fab chocolate. I am soooo full - my stomach requires more warning for these sort of things  The topics have ranged all over, as they so often do… and know doubt will continue to do.

Camster is a doll to have us all here… a very brave woman who deserves some sort of award. I would write more, but I am sure I am missing something. I know you all are!

Aaaahhh! They’re singing “I Will Survive”. What next, “Bad Girls”? Come to think of it, we could use some bad girls right about now, but that’s another matter.

Rampaging conversation ensues. More madness to follow. After that, more madness and the like. These guys think they can play guitar, but guess who had to show them the chords to “Hotel California”?

Anyway, back to the flute and sax.

Hey, hey, hey, hey. I knew the chords to “Hotel California”, I just couldn’t remember them at the time, is the thing. But as I recall I was not alone in completely forgetting the lyrics, Herr Zen.

If everybody makes it to Pleasanton soon, we’re gearing up Snoooooopy for his rendition of “Driver 8”. Should be good.

Hotel California
Eagles, 1976
Music by Don Felder & Joe Walsh
Words by Don Henley & Glenn Frey

This first part is the intro. It is repeated throughout the song
(except during the chorus).

GUITAR 1 (12-string electric, capo on 7th fret)
A 7 means open string, so it is easier to read.
These are easier if you realize that the chords they outline are:

In all, Don Felder, Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey managed to fit eight different
guitars in for this song. GUITAR 3 plays the cool “chicka” chords you hear
during the verses. Listen closely and you can pick this part out. Use
fret-hand muting on the following chords to get the percussive sound. In
other words, don’t push the strings down on the fretboard, just touch the
strings so they can’t vibrate much. In addition, palm-mute them to give a
sharper sound.

GUITARS 4 and 5 (distorted electrics) play chord tones in 3rds
during the verses. GUITAR 4 plays upper voicing, GUITAR 5 plays
the lower voicing. All the while, the 12-string continues
playing the intro chords.

Now, here’s the reason for so many guitars. On the “So I called up the Captain”
verse, GUITAR 4 & 5 repeat the part from the last verse, while GUITAR 7 & 8
(distorted electrics) introduce this “answer” harmony. The 12-string is (still)
playing the verse chords.

The rest of the song repeats parts I’ve already tabbed. If you’ve
got the tape or CD, I suggest you listen to it while looking
at the tab to find these parts. Now the solos. These are tough,
so practice a lot and look at the rhythm I have laid out so you
can get a feel for how it’s supposed to sound.

that’s all I’ll show in the tab. Both parts will be shown, GUITAR 8
plays high, GUITAR 7 plays low.

Here are the lyrics:

On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year)
You can find it here
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She’s got the Mercedes bends
She’s got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely Place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They’re livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibies

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master’s chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can’t kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman
We are programed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

I kinda feel guilty about that last post… But not really. Ya see, I am under the influence of “oats” as well…

Thanks for screwing up our party thread, Demo! Anyway, I am really tired and about to fall into bed, but thought I would check in real quick. I’ll probably regret it in the morning.

Party was a blast. Less wild debauchery, more intimate conversation. Specially about the Simpsons, much to the regret of Camran’s very nice friends. Dopers good. Nice to meet Dopers I hadn’t met before (which was almost everyone at this party!). Punllqods or however you spell it (Spellbound/Eddie) was incredibly sweet and gave me a ride home which was WAY far out of the way for him. Rasa is nice, she has very bright hair. She and Oldie really do look quite alike, and they brought brownies.

Oh, and Jack Batty said “homage” the Frenchy way seven times.

I am so tired, I can’t remember if Mr. Batty got to 8 homages. I had a great time, ate good food, drank good margaritas, observed a few fierce discussions (mostly revolving around the Simpsons), and didn’t realize until I got home that I actually spent 10 freaking hours with these people. It’s a good thing I like them lots. And an A+ to Snooooopy for Driver 8. I missed it the first time, so he played it again just for me before I left. What a nice guy.

It’s past my bedtime. I hope this made sense.

Jack Batty did get to eight on the “homage”-o-meter. A potential ninth time was overturned on a technicality.

Thanks to everyone who allowed me to play my “Driver 8” for them. I enjoyed performing.

Let’s make sure that these gatherings are not scarce. Beginning-to-end, it was one of the best I’ve ever been to.

Dayquil for everyone!

Wha - who - ugh. Where am I? What the hell did I do last night?

I have some vague recollections of Gloria Gaynor, my tongue melting from habaneros, the warm smell of colitas and Mexican beer.

All in all, I’d say the party could serve well as an homage to “The Great Gatsby’s” opening scene with a dab of “Animal House” thrown in.

I had a great time. I need to thank Snooooopy profusely for driving me right to my front door. Above and beyond the call of duty - I really appreciate it. I don’t think I was in any condition to deal with BART.

Thanks to Cam for serving as the quintessential host. Beautiful house - wonderful company.

Zen’s salsa platter was a thing to behold and also to fear (the feeling in my tongue is beginning to return).

The conversations on a whole were very spirited and interesting, no doubt making me feel more intelligent than I actually am just in participating.

Can’t wait to see those pics.
