Somewhat ?!
Somewhat and downright are arguably mutually exclusive, terms, so one can be forgiven for defaulting to downright.
A lot of people cling to the outdated notion that it’s not rape unless the victim physically resists. Which was the definition of rape for a long time. (ETA: Deuteronomy 22 - if the woman doesn’t scream, she is to be stoned to death for adultery.)
Like, it would surprise you how many people. My college for example finds it necessary to make all students take a course which only teaches this one point.

I think “somewhat” is often used as a kind of filler word that doesn’t really mean anything, so I assumed by the word “disgusting” that was closer to the poster’s feelings.
Those filler words can be tricky. As the old Hemingway advice goes, “Every time you are tempted to write “very,” replace it with “damn,” and your editor will remove it accordingly.”
I’ve been banging on that drum for a long time.
It’s not directly relevant but I’ve been looking for an excuse to share this, so…
“Neuroscience evidence counters a rape myth.”
Boy, that seems so intuitively obvious.
It’s a modifier to indicate understatement. Recall the line from King Rat, “That’s just about OK”, the response from the British POW when the American prisoner gave him a fried egg.
Addressed in the thread’s original run.

Let me give you lesson on social etiquette. This comes from years working as a bartender and waiter in fancy establishments and then marrying into a family whose business is international fancy foods and dining. I am dead serious about this because I think a lot of you really need it:
- When you go to a bar in an elegant setting, you are in no obligation to drink alcohol.
- However, you should have something at the table or in your hands most of the time. It helps other people to feel more at ease (this is the core foundation of all etiquette).
- Standard non-alcoholic choices include club soda with lemon/lime, Bloody Mary mix, or any other mixed drink that tastes good without the alcohol.
- If you choose a soda, ask for a lemon or lime to go with it.
And further on:
Finishing schools? Those are still a thing?
He was being sarcastic.
Huh. He would have approved of my usual bar drink. (Gingerale with cranberry juice and a twist of lime. Really delicious, and every bar can make it.) I don’t know whether that should creep me out or not.
Most of the writers of the Simpsons went to Harvard.
Including Conan O’Brien!
Fair enough !
You are forgiven !
TIL Conan O’Brien wrote for the Simpsons.
He wrote the monorail episode.
Yes, he started as a writer at Saturday Night Live, where he worked as a writing partner with Bob Odenkirk. He then left that job and flew from New York to LA to be a writer for The Simpsons. Then when Late Night needed a new host, Lorne Michaels (the guy who runs SNL and has a lot of power at NBC) suggested Conan and he has been a talk show host since.
He doesn’t show as banned and he’s even visited since his last post.
He should have been banned for a lot of reasons, not just misogyny. I always felt he made most of his stories up. He wrote like he had a third grade education, but everyone in his family were millionaires with super successful careers, including him. I don’t think anyone misses him too much.
