Shalimar Perfume

So I was poking around my Mom’s stuff, and ran across a Shalimar gift box - perfume and powder … and I have to wonder, are the younger women still buying the old perfumes? It seems that all the little samples that fall out of my Ulta catalog are so damned sweet and baby girl flowery that is a contrast from the ‘old lady’ perfumes [or what I think of as old lady perfumes, Shalimar and the stuff from the 40s and 50s]

I put some on, and it has what I definitely think of as a sort of powdery floral old lady sort of smell … it isn’t something that appeals to me [hell, I wear Bvlgari The Vert when I wear a scent that isn’t soap or shampoo specific]

I work with a ton of kids in their 20’s, some 30’s and don’t know any who buy “real” perfume at all, whether sweet or not. Maybe body spray type stuff or shower gels but that’s about it - and does skew fruity. Even among my friends, I’m the only one I know who will splurge on some good stuff once in a while. Current obsession is Marc Jacobs Decadence.

Wearing cologne seems to be more of a teenage thing now, at least where I live. I kind of miss smelling my late mom’s Ambush, Tabu, and other old-fashioned colognes.

I used to love Ambush, but they changed it and it’s not the same formula anymore. I wish they’d bring back the old formula.

Buy the mens cologne Canoe – it’s the same fragrance as the original Ambush, just called a ‘cologne’ and packaged for men. And it’s still in production and for sale/

My daughter, age 22, has worn the Bath & Body Works sprays/lotions since middle school. A few months ago I dragged her into Macy’s to try “real” perfumes, explaining it’s time to grow up and find her personal scent. She totally agreed - my mom is Estee Lauder Beautiful, I’m old school Tea Rose (since Charles of the Ritz is impossible to find anymore - talk about old school perfume!), her aunt is (gack) White Diamonds.

She picked out Theirry Mugler Angel.
