Well, my hipster cred is forever blown by the fact that I now own a big ol’ truck. So I might as well admit that…
(sob)
I WATCH AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL.
So here’s what I thought of the finale!!
(obviously, don’t read this if you don’t want to know anything about the finale…)
1.) Nina should have won. Given that she didn’t because of being unjustifiably gotten rid of, Jourdan should have won, which she did.
2.) Bryanboy wasn’t allowed as much screen time this season, which was good, as he is an annoying idiot.
3.) Tyra’s eyebrows?? REALLY?? They were like a cross between Nosferatu and Vampira.
and finally…
4.) I KNOW I’m going to watch the next one. ANTM addiction is not pretty.
But here’s a lovely piece of art I made, JUST to demonstrate what I’m talking about… Sad But True Comparison.
I loathe ‘hipster cred’. (What some dorks think is “in” or “out” is irrelevant to anything in my life.) A friend of a friend is an emergency room doctor and she LOVES the show. I have to say, Tyra has certainly gotten a lot of mileage out of ANTM!
I thought this season was great – a nice jolt in the arm since some previous ones have been pretty lackluster. But you are 100% wrong. I would have like Cory to win, or accepted Marvin. Jordan is good (if obnoxious), but so bland I’ve already forgotten what she looks like. Cory’s eyes are unforgettable, and he has an ethereal and sharp quality that makes him great.
I am glad Marvin didn’t win, he’s pretty enough until he opens his mouth. I am not just talking about his maw that takes up half the face (reminding me of the Canadians on South Park) but the crap that spews out of it. He took great joy in anything that might bring another contestant down, he fell all over himself anytime a girl looked at him and convinced himself that he was in love with all of them and vice versa. I am surprised Renee actually fell for him. Then he would cry like a baby when any of the other guys (except Chris) got sent home. I may be giving him too much credit but I think he was playing a game for sympathy and the social media scores. He just wasn’t savvy enough to tone down the doucheyness. And I was so sick and tired of his sob “son of a janitor” sob story. Lots of people overcome poverty and become famous but he’s only a model, he hasn’t cured cancer.
Speaking of sob stories, I was pretty sick of Jourdan’s “I was abused” story by the second episode. I wonder how many times she actually brought it up. Once I heard that abuse was the “theme” of the finale I was pretty sure she was going to win but I was afraid they’d still give it to Marvin because they wanted a guy to win. But she was actually the most “modelly” and I think she deserved to win.
I would have preferred Cory or Nina win but I knew that wasn’t going to happen. I was kind of surprised they torpedoed Nina like they did (judges scores not matching the critiques and they seemed really low as if to offset her high social media scores) but I also felt they wouldn’t give her the win because they kept comparing her to Allison Harvard and even though Allison didn’t win they probably didn’t want someone too much like her.
Poor Cory, he was really the most likeable and normal. Which is why he wasn’t going to win.
I don’t know… I just think that the three contestants at the end weren’t necessarily the ones who should have made it, but of those three, Jourdan deserved to win. Judged against someone like Nina, then no. The Nina thing was bizarre… I have a very hard time believing that “social media scores” were really the deciding factor.
Cory certainly should have been picked over Marvin, but what really bothered me was the way that he ended up as the evil boyfriend in that godawful little film. Kind of disturbing in a way that isn’t easy to put your finger on… but I couldn’t lose the feeling that he was never going to be allowed to win or even be the runner-up, no matter what.
I watch the show regularly with my daughter and we have a grand time with it. Still, I have been known to mention that I watch the show by saying, “IwatchAmerica’sNextTopModel,” so I feel ya, OP.
I wanted Nina to win. I still wonder what on earth their rationale for booting her off the show was. She was stunning, with a lovely spirit and memorable look. After her, I was mostly rooting for Cory, who I think is just great. I thought both Jourdan and Marvin were strong models, but the problem with Jourdan is that there’s nothing about her to set her apart from all of the other tall, slender models with symmetrical features and large blue eyes. Her personality is … not larger than life. I’m happy for Marvin that he found the success and exposure that he did. I could totally see all four of these plus Renee making a career of modeling.
All of the outfits in the finale were staggering. There’s no question that Jourdan can stomp her way down a runway, and the way she handled that gold cape was impressive. I want to go to Bali someday!
Ok, so I just finished a marathon session of ANTM. Love that they added guys, haaaate the whole living picture thing (poor Cory, an ape scratching? really??) don’t much care for the whole social media thing ( I’ve missed a few cycles) and really wanted Cory or Nina to win. Actually I wanted anyone BUT Jourdan, I thought she was really unremarkable in pictures. Her runway was good though.
Wish they hadn’t gotten away from the runway practices and weird teaching things they used to do too.
You really nailed all the high points! (Or low points, maybe…)
The “living picture” idea really made no sense at all. Um… yes, we all know that pictures CAN move. I kind of doubt there’s anyone on the planet who was born after the age of cinema!!
And the social media thing… I’ve never thought that was very well thought out. It was as if they were trying to convince us that social media *itself * was the story. That might have been a lot more relevant in 2005 or so, but now, there’s no reason to be impressed by the fact that a TV show is capable of using Facebook to tally votes.
That having been said, I’ll watch the next one. And I loved Cory too!
I hear ya, Anise - my wife started watching it, and got me hooked as well. Nevertheless, when Mister Jay and Miss Jay left, that was the moment that Tyra could look down between her waterskis and watch the shark passing beneath. Yes, those two were flamboyant and provocative, but if you watched more than one episode (and I have watched more than one season, for the love of all…), you realized that those two really knew what they were talking about. They were professionals. Of the current crop, Rob seems like brainless eye-candy, I see absolutely no indication that Kelly is qualified to talk about modeling or fashion, and Bryanboy is an annoying little twat.
Count me as one more for the Cory cabal. Not only was he, well, beautiful - my god, those eyes! - he was also I think the most versatile. Androgyny is his wheelhouse, obviously, but the Guess shoot showed that he could do masculine, as well. I do wish he wasn’t so uncomfortable with masculine roles - I wish Tyra would have said to him, “That’s just one more string in your bow.”
And of course he was the most sane, least drama queeny model in the house.
Bryanboy!! YES!!! He really needs to fall off the face of the earth. Onto the deck of a yacht, into a spaceship to be taken away to the Happy Planet, whatever… but not on ANTM anymore, that’s for sure. I’m not sure if ANYONE else liked Jourdan, but I had a soft spot for her. But yes, Cory was great. The thing about him is that I actually thought his Guess ad worked very well, and for some reason, he got zero credit for it.
Well, that shot of Nosferatu will always make me think of Spongebob now… ;)Really one of my favorite episodes ever. (And speaking of guilty pleasure shows…)
