If that other pharmacy is CVS you’ll find effectively the same policy. Pretty much all large corporations seem to have adopted that, regardless of the stringency of local government orders.

Folks who want to wear masks will, rule flouters will not, and the folks who’re sorta neutral and willing to take their cues from signs will mostly wear masks.

IMO that’s all the good it’s ever going to get in the USA. At least until nearly every family has a had death or somebody crippled by COVID. Only then will enough people believe.

I agree. There is too much opposition and too little political will to get widespread mask enforcement. If you want to be safe, you will have to take the necessary steps to keep yourself safe. It’s clear that Americans can’t count on their fellow citizens to make the necessary sacrifices.

So along those lines, wear masks that actually provide personal protection in the environments you are in. Don’t wear insufficient masks with thin fabrics or poor fit. Those may be okay when everyone is playing along, but they are inadequate when people aren’t wearing masks. Wear a mask which will provide appropriate filtration since you will be in environments which contain a fog of droplets from people not wearing masks. We can still work on getting more mask enforcement, but keep yourself safe until that happens (if it ever does).

I rather like this vintage clothing store’s sign.

These stories of mask-noncompliance sound so odd to me. Around here (central Jersey) virtually everyone wears masks indoors in public places, at least as far as I’ve observed. It appears to be a non-issue. Maybe it’s because local municipalities started requiring it early on, and then the state made them a requirement. So maybe we got used to wearing them before they became so politicized?

Or perhaps it might be related to the fact that while we have plenty of conservatives and right-wingers around, they don’t tend to be loud about it.

I dunno. I’m just glad I can go to the drugstore in peace.

I was at the Secretary of State’s office (Driver’s License Bureau) yesterday, and everyone has to be masked from when you join the hour-long outdoor line  until you leave the building except when you stand for your photograph. Inside the building, standing distances are well-marked on the floor and politely but firmly enforced by the employees. (I miss being able to sit while waiting my turn but needs must.) Everyone was properly masked…

Except for one yahoo who managed to find a strange new alternative to the “chin mask”. While waiting inside for his turn at the counter :face_with_raised_eyebrow: he had his mask duly covering his nose but with the bottom edge pulled to his upper lip. Two thoughts, dumbass: If I can see not only your mouth but the bottom of your mustache, you ain’t covered. And we’re worried about you breathing on us, not sneezing on us.

Oddly enough, none of the employees – who as I said were otherwise actively enforcing distancing and masking – said anything to this genius.

Where I live, I’d say about 80% compliance with the mask requirement.

Dozens of Mississippi lawmakers have coronavirus after weeks of refusing to wear masks: Mississippi lawmakers get coronavirus after refusing to wear masks | CNN

If a bunch die that will send a strong message of caution. If they all recover it’ll send the message that COVID is no big deal. We shall see.

Maskless moron at the Tractor Supply on Sunday, wearing a T-shirt that said, “Liberalism is a mental disease”. There were some other folks defying the mask order as well, but he got extra moron points for the shirt.

To enter a local restaurant, masks are required. However, many people wear the mask to get inside and promptly lower it so that nose and mouth are uncovered. One such person was gently reminded by another customer that a mask ought to cover both nose and mouth. (Staff are too busy to deal with such issues,)

The mask-lowering person claimed: “I am covered by The Lord!”

Why not have an official-looking card with the DOJ seal to affirm that you’re a fucking moron?: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sino/comments/hggxzv/in_murica_you_dont_have_to_wear_a_stinkin_face/

The city where my daughter lives mandated masks for everyone in indoor public spaces.
Of course, her employer decided they couldn’t actually force people to wear masks in store, that would be crazypants. A few departments decided fine, we’ll just make it difficult. No direct handing of product to customers without masks. She had someone pick up an order and told them to stay where they were, she’d place the order on a counter at the other end, please wait until I have backed away to get it. Customer started walking over before she put the order down, so she backed away and reiterated her directive. It took a few times and lots of complaining about snowflakes and Muh Rightz! before the customer got it.
And yes, customer complained to management. One of many, as I understand.
This morning there were signs up that masks are mandatory and management was at all doors turning away people without them.
She texted me this morning that one older lady, mask under her nose, was comparing wearing a mask to Nazi torture devices.

Legal question: Aren’t Covid parties a legal case of reckless endangerment?

“But I’m not. Mask up!”

Metal band Great White apologizes for performing to a packed, maskless crowd in North Dakota

So, for the second time in 20 years there are going to be people whose dying thoughts will be ‘Why did I go to a fucking Great White concert?’

I suspect at least part of the lack of enforcement comes from the stories of people trying to enforce getting physically assaulted and murdered.

To the topic, two folks wearing mask over chin (and one rideshare delivery driver entirely without) at the deli I got lunch at today. But the deli itself did give out free disposables, and there were a fair number of customers also there with masks.

My sister is a covidiot. She posted on Facebook that she and her family had planned to leave today to go to upstate New York (from North Carolina) to visit my brother-in-law’s family, including his 95 year old mother. The had to cancel yesterday because they found out that they would have to quarantine for 14 days and follow all these other “rules”. Now, in my mind, this was an incredibly stupid idea since my brother-in-law is an optometrist who has been seeing patients for several weeks now.

My sister’s kids are grown and on their own. They have been having at least weekly family gatherings since Mother’s Day. One nephew works in a restaurant, one works at home. My niece’s husband has been going to his office job from the beginning, while she stayed at home with their two little girls who are 3 and 7.

So, their plans spoiled for possibly infecting their relatives, they decided to visit a zoo a few hours away in South Carolina. Yes, they were mostly outside and were wearing masks at least some of the time. But from looking at the pictures, the little girls ran around touching everything and everyone. In the petting zoo, a goat decided to eat my sister’s shoelaces and there is a picture of two zoo workers trying to get the goat loose and my sister bending over inches from their faces, laughing. :astonished:

It’s like they are living on another planet. I haven’t said anything about it. I don’t think it would matter if I did. And they are on vacation for another week. What other fun will they get up to? At least they live far away from me. But I worry that their carelessness is going to have tragic consequences.

Why didn’t you say anything about it?

Because I’ve known my sister for almost 60 years. I learned long ago not to waste time arguing with her about anything. It is what it is.

Keeping your mouth shut now can be a good way to position yourself as a peacemaker once the Holy American Mask Civil War is over. My people call it the covid-19 pandemic.
