Who coined the phrase and what exactly is the sacrifice that others are supposed to share in?
What issue are you talking about? How hundreds of thousands of US military troops, not especially well paid, doing multiple rotations to two war zones, many thousands of whom have shed blood or suffered permanent injuries, while the rest of Americans go about their daily routine for a decade without having to pitch in anything extra for those who are carrying this burden? Is that what you’re talking about?
The meat of a sacrifice is always shared with anybody walking past the temple, it’s good luck.
Are you asking who the first person was to use the term? Because the oldest reference I found using the term “shared sacrifice” was in an 1899 memoir written by the wife of the British ambassador to Japan.
Recently, politically, Clinton used the term a lot to talk about deficit reduction.
That’s a good example of a sacrifice worthy of sharing in.
Seems like I’ve heard it recently calling for more taxes to share in the “sacrifices” of those harmed by current economic hard times.
In your view, would it be a worthy sacrifice for people to pay more in taxes to support a war effort?
Or bring along those who’s not as fortunate at the moment?
Fortune comes and fortune goes.
Why is that people think it’s possible to debate something like that? We see this all the time in GD. Give us specific quotes from specific people. Otherwise, you’re just doing the debate equivalent of a Rorschach test.
There’s a psychic dimension to shared sacrifice. It’s sometimes called bonding. In hierarchical or command/control organizations, it is an article of faith. You literally cannot trust someone who has not been through what you have.
The idea gets perverted when it’s applied to things like generational resentment. Eg, that Gen Y is morally decadent and coddled because they expect too much dignity in entry level work.
That is also a good example of a sacrifice worthy of sharing in.
Worthy …yes
Taxes … yes
more than we are right now … not so sure about that
Really, Even though taxes (of all types) are lower now as a fraction of our GDP than any time since the 1950s? Cite.
Meanwhile, current defense spending consumes roughly 2.5% more of our GDP than it did in 2000. Cite.
But you don’t think that our current military adventurism is worthy of raising taxes, and you prefer to borrow the money from China? What happened to taking responsibility for your actions? You would rather your kids have to pay for these wars? Or do you just want to cut all other services so that only the poor kids pay for these wars? What are you saying?
Such a meek and cowardly approach to your point, how sad for you.
When come back, bring more context and content, less dancing.
I just sacrificed your arse mate! They were just about to ping you off the board. See, that’s what it’s all about.
