I would normally post this question to the Facebook help questions forums, but every time I type out the question and press the “Post” button, nothing happens. It just freezes. So here I ask:
Person A posts a photograph of Person B on A’s photo page, and tags B’s name (B is also on Facebook). Using Facebook’s “Share this photo” button, Person C sends this photo to Person D (C and D are also on Facebook).
Are A or B notified that C has sent a copy of the photo?
I ask this because I was C, and shortly after I sent a copy of a photo, it disappeared from A’s page. Could be coincidence, but the paranoid side of me has to know.
I’m pretty sure you get notified if people do stuff to your photo (tag someone, comment, etc). I’ve never had anyone share my photos with others but it makes sense I’d be notified if someone did that.
ETA: Actually I just checked my notification settings and there are no options about being notified when someone shares my photo with someone else, so maybe that means no notification goes out.
Well if friend D is friends with either A or B, or if A/B are freinds with both C/D they’d get a notification on their main page showing that you shared the photo (but that’s for just a public sharing- if you shared via your profile/public posting, then it’s pretty much visible to anyone who reads your profile), I’m not sure how it’d work for a private, one person sending the message to another person ( I don’t think there’s a notification for those (where you share via private message) at least testing it out on my own facebook that seems to be the case, but I’m not sure if privacy settings could be changed in that way or such.
If you wanted to share a photo w/o them knowing (and A/B are not freinds w/ D and have private setting), to simply right click and go to “copy image location” and you can share photos from facebook users to others who are not friends with them by showing them the photo (though there will not be any labels or such on it).
I should add that when you click the “Share” button under someone’s photo, you have the option to either “Post to Profile” or “Send as a Message instead”. In my case, C sent the copy of the photo as a message to D.
And no, I did not accidentally post it to my profile. I did send it to D, it’s still in my “Sent” messages, addressed to D and D only, but there is no longer any photo attached because A has taken down the photo from A’s photo page.
