I remember HUGE media attention devoted to her martyrdom and even a book called “She Said Yes” about her…but it was all bunk? Does anyone have any more info on this?

Hi, Cisco.
salon.com has an article on the subject.
There was an SDMB thread about the book too. Oh, and here’s another one.
Research away!

According to a one-year follow up story in the Nov 1, 1999 issue of Newsweek entitled “Columbine’s Tragic Wake”, Cassie Bernall did not say anything when confronted by Klebold and Harris.
I have since lost the article, and cannot directly quote, but several seperate witnesses to Cassie’s apparent heroism in the library stated that she had no reply, save sobbing, to the question of “Do you believe in God?”.
Also, according to the article, these witnesses were actually harassed by local Christian activists and members of Cassie’s family for their frank expression of the truth.
I must admit, I have a hard time faulting the Bernall’s or their local church members for their pursuance of this rumor. I suppose they felt a need to make something heroic and good out of a terrible crisis.
If you have a Newsweek Online-Article account, you can check the article for yourself. Otherwise, you’ll just have to take my word for it.
