Sheer stupidity!

Nine illegal immigrants who were arrested during a Government raid while working and getting paid “under-the-table” by Wal-Mart as cleaning contractors are suing the company for discrimination, saying they didn’t receive proper overtime pay and benefits commensurate with Federal and state labor laws. Wal-Mart insists they did nothing wrong. Sorry, folks, but I’m going to have to take Wal-Mart’s side on this one. While I don’t believe Wal-Mart is the most morally and ethically pure company, I do see a few rhetorical problems with the plaintiff’s arguments. To wit:

  1. Why didn’t the immigrants sue before the raid? It doesn’t sound like they were complaining when they actually had the jobs.

  2. According to Newsday.com, the immigrants were paid $350 to $400 a week under-the-table. Folks, that’s how much I make after taxes. What are they complaining about?

  3. If they were captured in an raid for illegal aliens, why haven’t they been deported yet?

  4. (And this one’s the kicker) THEY’RE ILLEGAL! They are not subject to the protections of Federal and state labor laws! Furthermore, the court clerk should have laughed and tossed them back out on the street for attempting to use the civil court system which is provided by, to, and for LEGAL, TAXPAYING CITIZENS. Gee, golly, am I the only one who sees this?

Now, folks, I am not some Bible-thumping, gun-toting, right-wing, good-ol’-boy conservative. On the contrary, I’m a very left-winged liberal (and proud Bush-hater, to boot). But if someone as liberal as myself sees problems with this case, is it the justice system that’s gone mad, or am I just crazy? I beg you, please respond with your comments, good and bad. I don’t care if you’re American, English, Morrocan, Upper Voltan, Chinese, or Martian. Give me your thoughts.
