Anyone watch/watching this?? It was just broadcast live in central time zone, and I understand mountain/pacific will be seeing it as well later.
Good performances by Rod Stewart and Dixie Chicks.
But I must admit I was absolutely blown away by Kanye West. I have never heard the song “Jesus Walks” before and I have never heard him rap. I thought it was just awesome.
Critter42, I’m not up on Gospel, so I can’t help you with those first two, but Walkin’ to New Orleans was delivered in fine style by none other than Dr. John, the Night Tripper hisself.
BTW, I thought it was a class decision to forego the introductions and credits.
Very amazing production, all-in-all. I was a bit skeptical about the OP’s praise for both Rod Stewart and and Kanye West – but…
Holy crap, I never thought that Rod Stewart could shine in an acapella performance. Somehow that sandpaper voice of his blended beautifully with all those dulcet tones. Damn, that was fine.
And Kanye West… Wow. I think I’m disinclined to like him personally (especially after his earlier shenanigans) but I don’t recall ever hearing rap that was that fucking awesome outside of Saul Williams or KRS-1.
Neil Young is always the man. Paul Simon delivered as usual. Randy Newman totally set the tone.
As an aside, this has been one of the very few times when I’ve been genuinely glad that a credit card allows you to spend money that you haven’t actually got in your hand.
Can anyone tell me the name of the band that not only looked like the old Creedence Clearwater Revival, but also they played CCR’s “Born On The Bayou”?
He did, and it brought a “WTF?” from me. It came right at the beginning of his spot asking people to call the number and pledge, and seemed to have no context whatsoever (either that, or he was doing a comedy bit for an audience–was there an audience?–and the last line snuck on camera by accident).
I heard something like that, only I thought he said, “George Bush hates niggers.” I didn’t hear it clearly, and I didn’t find any other reference to it online , so I assumed I misheard it. What ever it was, it appeared to me to be something he said before he realized he was on the air.
The “George Bush hates midgets” bit was a piss-take aimed at Kanye West, who went of the rails at his last appearance to raise money for Katrina relief.
