IMHO, making jokes about odd ways folk have died has a long standing tradition here. Darwin awards anyone? It seemed to clear to me that Shirley had gotten a mental image about a caftan wearing/Uzi toting bovine and it caused the giggles.
where things went wrong IMHO:
I’m not a fan of sympathy threads in the PIt in the first place. Yes, it was a shitty thing to happen but really I didn’t see Tripler raging against the bovines in question, not even the fates/what have you that set about this ironic set of events. Just an acknowledgement of “this is shitty”. and I doubt that any replies other than the traditional sympathetic ones would have been welcome, either. (as in any statement about the IRaq situation in general, any suggestion that the guy himself was at fault for the accident - remember when some numb nuts told jodi that if she’d hit two deer while driving it’s obviously her fault?). He needed and wanted sympathy, therefore the thread in question would have been better suited for MPSIMS in my most humble non mod like opinion. placing it in this forum makes it more likely to garner attention that wasn’t desired.
And, Shirley erred by not recognizing there’s a difference in that type of comment in a general thread vs. a thread about some one specific and personal to the poster. IOW, had the OP been some one who’d merely read about the accident and was commenting on the irony of a guy about to deploy to Iraq getting killed in a routine accident, maybe it wouldn’t have been such a sore spot.
er, yeah. Count me in as one who looks for Shirley’s threads, and perks up when she sees that Shirley has added to a thread. She’s one of my favorite posters.

I’d understand if the pitting if she defended her joke and went on like she did nothing wrong, but she hasn’t. She realized her mistake, apologized and hasn’t done it again. What more do you want?
The fuck she did. Read the thread. She made a lame ass disclaimer at the bottom of the original post. She has yet to apologize. This is probably because she isn’t aware of this thread yet of course.
Yeah, no kidding. In fact, if she had the presence of mind to note that her “joke” (if you can call it that) was inappropriate, why the fuck did she post it? She has not been back to apologize, in spite of Tripler’s rightful reprimand. I guess it’s just a driveby.
Um, Duke, sure it was a lame joke but I think you are overanalyzing this a bit. Remember, we are in a war on terrorism hence the joke. Your analysis was as thin as a dead anorexic. See, I am not good at dark humor either so I will stop now.
I only put the analysis in there in case somebody missed the Bush Bash (I know, no much of a chance, it was pretty transparent).
I don’t have any problem with a Bush Bash, it’s not like one doesn’t pop up every ten minutes or anything. What I didn’t care for was a thinly veiled Bush Bash masquerading as a joke at the expense of Tripler’s dead buddy. Some people around here will stop at nothing to get a jab in to push some agenda.

And to me, it’s stunningly, immediately obvious that the smilie was supposed to be a Wally, not a Happy Jewish Man, because one normally completes the self-deprecatory phrase “I’m such a…” with the word “…putz”, not “…Jew”.
