The Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska just lost the election in Gambia. Better known as President Yahya Jammeh (and that Admiral thing is a real title, believe it or not) he once promised to rule Gambia for a billion years. Preposterous of course, although I’m sure the 22 years he did rule seemed like a billion to the Gambians, especially to the women he hunted as witches and the gay men whose throats he promised to slit personally.
He was shockingly defeated by opposition leader Adama Barrow, who is very little known and only became opposition leader by virtue of the fact that Jammeh threw all his other opponents in jail. The result is a shock because, although Jammeh is massively unpopular, it is practically unheard of for such a bloody tyrant to hold a fair election and even more rare for such a despot to accept the result.
I do have my doubts though. I would not be at all surprised if Jammeh had some nasty tricks up his sleeve yet. But putting that aside this is a glorious day for Gambians and I heartily congratulate them for getting rid of this creep.
