Shocking Ads

Well that one could be the word having different connotations in different cultures.

Growing up in the UK, “oriental” was the standard descriptive way to refer to people from East Asia. I never did, and still never have, heard it used in any kind of insulting way. “Asian” usually was taken to mean from the Indian subcontinent, as they were a much larger demographic within the UK.

Of course I stopped using the word “oriental” for people as soon as I heard it was an offensive term in the US, because I want to err on the side of not causing offense.
I’m just saying is it a possibility that your wife and Thai friends are just not aware that that’s a word with a particular connotation in American culture?

Lifebuoy soap.

Herbal Essences shampoo had a very flowery but somehow minimalist animation of a young hippie-type woman whose, ummm, charms were concealed behind strategically-placed foliage.

Of course, the ones I’m remembering were from the early 70s.

Yup, those were their 1970s ads. When Herbal Essences was re-introduced in the '90s, they did a very different ad campaign, with the orgasmic women.

It looks to me like most cigarette ads would get shut down today.

Best one is this. Yeah, that’s the way to woo women…

CIGARETTES. The “Nico Time” advertisement promoting smoking during pregnancy is fake . It stems from the video game series Bioshock, see here. Their site confirms the “Nico Time” advertisement was designed by Kat Berkley, an artist who worked on the game (see here and here).Mar 6, 2020

If you ever have a question about the legitimacy of a “vintage ad” just Google the brand name.
Many of the outrageous ones are parodies

Well feck. I should have been tipped off by the name. OTOH, there are a lot of brands that aren’t in production any more either.

There are thousands are real examples, and like Poe’s Law, no parody can be worse than the worst real ones. Welcome to the club.

The image quality is the biggest giveaway, if the image doesn’t look like it was scanned from a decades old magazine ad it’s a fake. There’s absolutely no reason for a “vintage” ad to look absolutely flawless quality wise.

Also, during the time period implied by the ad’s appearance, it was considered very improper for a pregnant woman to show off her bump; it might have been acceptable to appear in public clad in a large, formless muumuu. Heck, my grandmother was forced to quit teaching elementary school in the early 1950s once she had started to show.

What grammar error does “I’d rather fight than switch” contain?

It wasn’t written that way but as "Us Tareyton smokers would rather fight than switch”.

Ah, well that’s not write.

This one is my favorite. Take a good look at these attractive (although rather dour looking) women. Despite the frowny faces - which I assume is the result of being turned down for the job - what other attribute do they all have in common? - or perhaps I should say what attribute do they all NOT have?

Surely you noticed that they are all rather small-busted? I’m pretty sure this ad is a promise that if you fly Delta, your air waitress will have large breasts.

Anybody who wasn’t white didn’t even get interviewed.

Some Googling confirmed that yes, that is Ali McGraw.

And following some links about that reveal that there was a commercial.

The commercial is even more WTF.

Well it’s not very clear because they are all dressed in a frumpy way designed not to show off whatever they do have.
