Shocking songs to straightlaced people others find funny...

I mentioned this in the banned songs thread, how about The Cure’s “Killing an Arab”

Scratch my previous reply. I misread the OP. It sure would shock the straights, but there is nothing funny about it. sorry.

Mojo Nixon. Most of his stuff.

A few that instantly come to mind:
She’s Vibrator Dependent

Stuffin’ Martha’s Muffin

Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child

Louisiana Liplock

It’s by “Sloppy Seconds”. That song almost perfectly crystalizes the “Not that there’s anything wrong with that” sentiment.

Also worth mentioning would be “Come Back, Traci” by the same band. It tells the tale of someone who becomes a fan of Traci Lords (only to find out she was too young to be in the business) and his desire for her to come back.

There are a couple of Violent Femmes songs that qualify…but only if the easily-offended ones actually listen to the words. Like “Country Death Song” or “Kiss Off.” They’re not terribly funny, though. Well, there’s always “Dance, Motherfucker, Dance.”

For the Dead Milkmen, I nominate “Bitchin’ Camaro,” “Watching Scotty Die” and “Sri Lanka Sex Hotel.” Oh, and “Stuart” offends just about anyone.

And let me also mention Local H’s “High-Fiving MF,” which is basically a rant against their own (stupid, beer-swilling) fans. It’s not funny, per se, but it is a hell of a lot of fun.

XTC’s “Pink Thing,” a love song to one’s, well…you know…

It’s really cute, though, and joyful. Not lascivious at all.

The first thing I thought of while reading the thread title was “HIV” by Ween. Sounds like Merry-go-round music, and the only lyrics are “HIV, AIDS”

I like “I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks” by the Bloodhound Gang.

I’d have to go one further and say that anything by the Bloodhound Gang qualifies.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Frank Zappa. You haven’t lived till you’ve seen a five-year-old wander through the living room singing “The bigger the cushion, the better the pushin.” But then I guess I’m showing my age.

You guys. Young. Rock and rap educated. But so, so lacking in the true classics.

Anything, anything by Tom Lehrer. Well, except the stuff he did for The Electric Company (and maybe The Elements).

Ah, the delights. The Masochism Tango. Poisoning Pigeons in the Park. The Drug Peddler. The Vatican Rag. Classics. True classics. Every one hilarious, every one guaranteed to offend at least one of your friends. Political, societal, religious, historical, mathematical — he could skewer them all.

Rap depends on bad words and ramming up against true feeling. Lehrer depends on real irony and sarcasm, bringing the idiocies of modern culture to light. It is insane that a thread with this title has not brought him up yet.

Wesley’s definitely closer to the second. For some of his lyrics, check here. For some of his art and links to details about him, check here.

TISM is a walk-up starter for this thread.

You gotta love a band who has released songs such as (He’ll Never Be An) Ol’ Man River, where the opening line is ‘I’m on the drug, i’m on the drug, i’m on the drug that killed River Pheonix!’.

Even some of their titles cause a stir - somehow, I don’t think their song ‘Kill Americans’ is too appropriate right now.

One of their song titles i’d use for a sig, but it might be only appropriate for the Pit …

… “I might be a c…t, but i’m not an f…king c…t”.

I think that describes me very well, actually …

FWIW, my other nomination for this thread would be Machine Gun Fellatio. Just the name of the band would send some straight-laced types into convulsions …

This is a good example of a song that people think is offensive without trying to understand the meaning of the song, which seems to me to be a quite good satire on the place of celebrity in society, and fits in with a Lester Bangs story in which he ingests the drugs that were found inside Elvis, and has a trip which includes him becoming Elvis himself. It’s not so much a funny song as a smart-arse song.

Lehrer is the anti-rapper. He is as creative and ascerbic with his wit as the gangsta’s are brutal and visceral with their outrage.

In a lovely book called High Weirdness By Mail, theres a guy mentioned named Blowfly.
Anyone heard of him?

I don’t think Lehrer belongs in this list (and I have the recent CD reissue of his first two albums). He never tried to offend, even when he wrote about potentially offensive subjects. Part of his genius was in the way he managed to dance around the subject.

Similarly, Cole Porter wrote some songs with strong sexual themes (“Let’s Do It,” “Let’s Misbehave,” “Always True to You, Darling, in my Fashion”), but offended no one.

For instance, the song “Young Boys”, in which a husky-voiced female sings:

Young Boys, charming and innocent
Adolescent fun
My toys, spectral virginity
I wanna watch them come!
Hey boys, I’m a candybar
A tidbit for your tongue
Those boys with your chastity
I wanna be your very first one!

Young boys, dressed up in leatherettes
I wanna make 'em shine
Come down to my special route
Number sixty-nine
My boy, shock me and thrill me
You know what I desire
You’re hot, nasty and spicy
You’ll have to quench my fire

Chorus :
Young boys, I want you to be my toys
I’m begging you please
Young boys, I’m down on my knees
Young boys, I’ll take you to heaven
Boys!

As my friend said when she heard this, “Did she just say what I THINK she just said?” Me: “Yup!”

Quoth the Lords: “Hey, not ALL our songs are about sex - some are about drugs!”

ahem. from tom lehrer’s song “smut”___:

"i could tell you things about peter pan
and the wizard of oz (there's a dirty old man)"

the album i have is live, and you can hear the audience gasp when he says this. true, it’s a delighted sort of gasp, covered with laughter, but you can’t convince me he wasn’t trying to shock people.

from his “hunting song”

“i went out and shot the maximum the game laws would allow,
two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow”

not trying to shock people? maybe not all the time, but i think he enjoyed seeing how much he get away with.
