Reports say five dead.
Scary stuff. Police report 2 shooters. No word on motive, and while we could speculate, let’s wait for official word before issuing fiery condemnations of anybody.
For all the good that will go…
I’m going to go way out on a limb here and guess that when someone shoots at Muslims, they’re likely trying to kill Muslims. I know it’s a long shot…
For all we know this was a result of a dispute among members of the prayer group. There’s no need to rush to judgment.
I can’t express how much I hope I am wrong and you are right. What’s a person to do with such hate? How do you fight this? I’m at a loss.
Is it sad that I immediately thought “Oh wow, there’s a Quebec City in America too?”
Sure, lets give the Christians the benefit of the doubt when Muslims are killed in a Christian country. Just like we always give gthe Muslims the benefit of the doubt when Christians are harmed in Muslim countries, right?
Let’s see if we can find an old thread about a Christian being harmed in a Muslim country, starting off with an admonition that we should take a wait-and-see attitude before condemning the Muslims.
Richard Spencer tweeted, “Why are there mosques in Quebec City, one of the most beautiful cities in North America?” Talk about begging to be punched in the face …
Agree. News sources say there may have been a third shooter, but we’ll have to wait and see. Let’s allow the investigators to do their thing before jumping to conclusions.
I saw his tweet. He must like getting punched in the face.
I also just found out that a Texas mosque was burned down yesterday. Jezus.
Now six.
A Canadian news source and several British news sources are reporting the gunmen shouted Allahu Akbar.
If accurate, that’s quite a development. It’s still early and it seems likely more details will be reported later Monday.
One of the more recent reports that I heard said that the two suspects may be Laval University students and one may be Moroccan, but nothing solid yet.
As soon as I heard the story, I suspected the shooters were Muslims themselves. CBC reports now say the shooters were screaming “Allahu akbar” (wow, who could ever have predicted that? Besides, you know, EVERYONE).
So, don’t you feel silly now for racing to conclude that North America is filled with violent Christians chomping at the bit to kill foreigners for no reason?
Speaking of “racing to conclude”, the Canadian P.M. seems convinced the shooting is the work of Muslim-haters:
*"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the shooting a “terrorist attack on Muslims,” and offered his condolences.
“While authorities are still investigating and details continue to be confirmed, it is heart-wrenching to see such senseless violence. Diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we, as Canadians, hold dear," Trudeau said. "*
Allahu akbar with a strong Québécois accent? Hm. Anyone these days could shout allahu akbar, so I think I’ll wait 'til the investigators tell us who did it.
According to Al Jazeera, the people of Victoria, Texas have already raised $600,000 to rebuild their neighbor’s mosque.
The fire MAY have been arson, or it may have been an accident. There’s no evidence yet. But the generous reaction of the Christian locals suggests that, even in a small town in Texas, Islamophobia is not running rampant.
To be fair to Trudeau his quote is not entirely wrong. Sure, it can be interpreted as mealy-mouthed, but these shootings can probably be labelled a terrorist attack. Nothing in the wording of Trudeau’s statement is entirely inconsistent with what may be an attack on Muslims by fellow Muslims.
On some days, I’m **not **embarrassed to be a Texan.
Names released. Senseless tragedy. I hope police learn the motive.
