Shooting at Virginia Tech

Whenever a shooting like this happens, the gun fetishists always come out of the woodwork to make the ridiculous claim that these situations would be rectified if only there were MORE idiots taking potshots all over the place. I wonder how the police would be expected to be able to distinguish the maniacs from the vigilantes.

They’re reporting 32 dead now.

There’s video of police handcuffing a man prone on the ground. Whether that’s the suspect or a case of “Handcuff everyone and we’ll sort it out later” I don’t know.

32? My God.

I’m on CNN, what are you watching?

The Texas tower shooting was in 1966, not '67. It’s something I think about from time to time as I hike across the campus where I work. I have actually given thought as to where I would hide if the (not) unthinkable happened.

The building I work in has the same name as one the buildings involved today. Just a little creepy.

Fox. Apparently the video of police handcuffing a man was a campus (?) reporter that was getting in the way. He was released shortly after they confirmed who he was.

It’s always a race to see which side of the issue is quicker on the draw (so to speak) to begin the political exploitation.

What channel are you on, Ivylass. I heard 22 and CNN hasn’t raised that number as far as I can tell.

MSNBC is still reporting 22 dead.

According to the sheriff’s dept., shooter is believed to be a college aged Asian male. He apparently shot himself.

ABC says that there’s at least 29 dead.

:frowning:

For breaking news the Drudge Report often updates faster than anyone else (they link to other sources.)

I heard 30+ on CBS a few minutes ago.

I’ve got Fox on.

On the drudgereport it is saying 32.

29 confirmed, more details. One killed at one site, the vast majority at the second site.

“Fed sources” are saying 32.

In the name of all that is or might be fucking holy I wish CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc., would STOP playing the sound of the gunfire (sent in by students with their camera phones). It’s not just morbid and gory but disrespectful and they can claim it’s for newsworthiness all they want but they’re doing it for ratings. Knowing that all those shots equals death or major injury it’s just incredibly evil to keep on airing them. IMO.

Suspect had 2 9mm pistols with multiple magazines. They are more or less confirming that it was the same shooter.

21 dead plus the gunman to make 22 total. I just got back to my dorm. I was one building away from where it seems that most of the shooting happened. I was in my 9 AM class and someone looked out the window (we were on the second floor) and saw a squad of police, guns drawn, between Randolph Hall (where I was) and Norris Hall (where the majority of the shooting occurred.) The class, of course, swarmed to the windows to see what was happening as some people checked the internet for news. We found out that way that the campus was locked down. I had my lap top with me so for a while I was following the story on CNN.com and on VT’s front page. Unfortunately my battery ran out and I was left catching moments of other people talking about what was happening.
At around 11:30, (just a guess, I wasn’t paying attention to the time) we all left the room we were gathered in and went down the hall to another room that had a few people and a TV showing a news conference with the President of the University. When he mentioned the figure of 22 was announced, most of us couldn’t believe it, since the news all morning had been saying 1 confirmed death and less than 10 injured.
They announced shortly after that that we could leave the building to go home but I stayed in Randolph a little longer until they officially announced that the dorms were open and that I would be able to get in.
As I left, the campus is still thick with police in the area surrounding Norris and the whole place is so quiet. I’m back in my dorm room now and still quite shaken. 21 people got up this morning, worrying about their homework and the tests they had this week. 21 people. Dear God.

On preview:

32! I pray to God that someone got their figures wrong. I haven’t heard any number other than 22 (shooter included) though I had heard that another group (possibly 17, though I’m far from positive) was injured/hospitalized. Possibly some of them didn’t make it. I pray it isn’t true.

catsix: I am struggling to think of remarks that could be in poorer taste to the matter at hand. Please don’t try to turn this thread into a gun control debate. I’m sure that if you check GD you’ll find more than enough people to argue with. I just ask that you please don’t try it here.

It’s unbelievable that one person managed to shoot 50 or so people.

This thread has zilch to do with a debate on guns being allowed on campus, so don’t try to turn it into one. If that’s all you have to offer for this thread, then bow out now and move along.

That said, if you want to start a GD thread about guns on campus, you’re welcome to do so and link to it from this thread.

CNN just updated their numbers and said 22 dead, 29 wounded.
