Shooting in Monterey Park Lunar New Year festival leaves at least 10 dead [2023-01-21]

Looks like he was a former “informal dance instructor” at the ballroom. People who knew him said he was short-tempered and paranoid. He had moved years ago to a senior citizen mobile home park in Hemet, but it looks like he decided to return and shoot up the dance hall boss and anyone else.

I had just been wondering a week or two ago if dance halls and ballroom dancing were still around anywhere. It looks like they are - and in Asian communities. At least I haven’t seen or heard of any in other communities in decades.

The reports I saw said that ballroom dancing was a popular activity for older Asians, and most of the victims reported on were older.

I know a lot of non-asian younger adults (college kids and up) who go ballroom dancing every Wednesday, and take lessons. It may not be as popular as it used to be, but it’s definitely still a thing people do, and not just in the Asian community.

Really - I had no idea.

Didn’t that guy who targeted Asian-owned nail salons strike in multiple locations himself?

I prefer that people like this be taken alive, so they can at least tell us why.

It’s interesting how we sometimes feel cheated when the killer kills himself too. It’s like we don’t get closure. Like nearwildheaven says, we don’t get to know their motivation. And from a darker perspective, we don’t get to “punish” them with a trial and execution. There’s no “vengeance,” however limited, that we can take comfort in. And it feels like some of these shooters know this and kill themselves for exactly that reason.

Quite honestly, I prefer it when the killer gets zero attention and zero psychological analysis. Because the killer’s psychology is not the problem. There will always be people with major psychological problems.

Yeah. I feel like people sometimes “break”. And breaking in a “lash out and attack people” is a fairly common thing. I don’t need to know exactly what led to it. And I don’t feel the need for vengeance, because I think of it in terms of people being morally and emotionally damaged more than I think of it in terms of people choosing evil.
