At 3am this morning our Trenton All Night Art Fest was shot up. Though it’s not being called a mass event and is being radically under-reported, I’d say 17 shot, two dead, and one likely-to-die fulfills the description. Given our demographics here, it’s no mystery why this isn’t getting the same coverage as a suburban shooting of this dimension would.
I’m so, so, so, so angry and frustrated. For every step forward this city takes it immediately takes two backwards. Underneath the grime, grit, decay, and poverty is a once gorgeous and vibrant city. There are so many talented and wonderful people here and we’re wasting potential.
I guess I’m pitting everything and nothing. My first go-to is usually concern then action, but I just feel angry and resigned today.
Yeah, still a bit muddled reporting from local outlets. According to my neighbor, a FOAF’s 13yo kid is in hospital likely not to make it. I hope this is incorrect.
I’m very sad for what happened in your community, Jennshark. What more can I say? Stay as safe as possible, as has already been said.
I don’t know what form “action” will be for you but take all the time you need prior to it, and don’t kick yourself for needing time. I wish for you all the comfort family and friends, favorite things and activities can provide in the days ahead.
It’s an annual overnight cultural event and a very special celebration in a city that most folks in the 'burbs won’t venture into after the Government workers flee for the day.
This is tragic for many reasons, one of them being the besmirching of one of a very few bright cultural stars in the City. I won’t be surprised if this is the end of the Festival. It confirms peoples Very Worst Fears and Prejudices about Trenton as true.
I’m politically exhausted, there’s talk of a march next week, but I’m temporarily just. Done.
It’s being reported here in Aus too, so please don’t feel like your town is being ignored.
I hope your citizens rally and refuse to let two neanderthals close the festival permanently. It’s a tragedy today, but humans are renowned for fighting back against this sort of shit. This might just be the catalyst for better things for Trenton.
Sadly, this is true. People here in NJ seem to think of Trenton as a lost cause.
In contrast, Newark is very slowly but surely being rehabilitated, and folks seem to have high hopes for its future. It just got a Whole Foods, for pete’s sake. Nobody’s gonna be opening one in Trenton.
I’m sorry this happened in your neck of the woods, Jennshark.
In many ways, I think that is worse - and a sign of things to come in an increasingly armed society.
I hope both morons were carrying legally, to add a nail to the ‘good guys with guns’ coffin. Of course, that coffin is going to need at least a million nails.
My daughter goes to that festival every year and always has a great time.
This afternoon I came home from a run and she casually said “Did you hear about the shooting last night?”–I had not.
She then filled me in on the details.
I didn’t even know the festival was yesterday. Last night my wife was at her sister’s house, so instead of dining alone, I asked my daughter if she wanted to go to dinner with me, and we had a good time together.
Unknown to me, she had been planning on going to the festival, and her friends had asked her, but for some reason wasn’t feeling up to it. My invitation to dine apparently gave her an alternative.
