Shopping channel snark

Pat went through a nasty divorce a few years ago. It was pretty well publicized that her husband cheated on her. Maybe she’s medicated. I like her too though.

As I recall, she’s from Maryland. There’s a host on a PBS Genealogy show who speaks similarly.

I got a good laugh when I was channel surfing and landed on an Evine fashion show yesterday. They were showing a line called Indigo Threads Co.

The vendor looked like a sidekick from a Clint Eastwood spaghetti Western movie! She wore a poncho with long fringes, denim short-shorts with frayed hems, and brown cowboy boots (also with fringes). All she needed was a cowboy hat to complete the “Good, Bad and Ugly” look.

I can’t figure out what Indigo Threads wants to be. Their line is a mish-mash of 70s hippie-inspired fringed vest and tops, long handkerchief hem skirts, rompers, loose boxy tunics and jeans.

I saw them present some pieces from this line last night. The capper? A “romper”. Basically a shorts jumpsuit. For adults. Yes. O.O

Another JTV host is gone, Michelle Lau. I liked her. Often she did early morning shows, somewhere around 6 a.m., and she was always calm and pleasant. She wasn’t huckster-ish. It’s unclear whether she quit or was fired. She posted on Facebook “Life took an unexpected turn yesterday and I am no longer with JTV,” she posted on her personal Facebook Tuesday. “Please continue to follow this page and ‘share’ it, please! I love you guys and look forward to seeing you on the air again soon! Love, Michele xxx’”

From another of her posts quoted on the Homeshoppingista blog, it sounds like she got fired and is stunned: "On Wednesday Lau posted a photo of a butterfly that had landed on her screen door.

‘Look who stopped by this morning to offer support,” she wrote. “For those that know me well you know how special butterflies are to me. I apologize that I am not responding to you all, please forgive me. I will reach out soon and love and appreciate you more than you know.’ "

On some other forums I read that Michelle has a severe vision problem (possibly she’s legally blind). If this is true, maybe she just couldn’t read the studio monitor any more, in spite of wearing her glasses. We will know more if she shows up as a host on anther channel.

Homeshoppingista also reported that former JTV host Avi Veiria just showed up on Evine as a watch vendor rep for Watchstar watches. I didn’t know this, but she worked at Evine before going to JTV.

Avi was another low-key type host. So is JTV trying to get rid of all the hosts who aren’t pushy?

Speaking of high pressure sales tactics, the JTV hosts have been saying on air that JTV now lets you spread out the purchase cost of a product on two or three different credit cards. They were pushing this pretty hard over the weekend when they were selling some expensive diamond rings (low thousands). This sounds kind of predatory to me. If the customer can’t afford to buy a piece of jewelry on just one credit card, she isn’t in a financial position to tie up two or three cards to buy one item.

JTV already offers an inhouse “JTV Preferred” credit card, with 25.99% APR, although you can get the purchase interest-free if you pay it off before the deadline a few months later – that’s great if you can be disciplined enough to make all the payments before the interest deadline hits. They also have Stretch Pay for use on one credit card. And customers can use PayPal, which offers PayPal Credit extended payments. So all these options still aren’t enough, and JTV is trying to get people to make a purchase using multiple cards?

Jewelry is a luxury purchase, not a necessity. I can’t see going to the trouble to spread a purchase over several credit cards unless it’s something urgent like your electric bill, an unexpected car repair or a sudden big vet bill for your pet. I’ve used multiple cards when one of my cats was seriously ill and needed emergency surgery. But I wouldn’t do that to buy a ring!

I liked Michelle, too. I’ve known of her since the early 2000s when she hosted at HSN’s then ‘sister’ channel, America’s Store. I used to watch AS a lot and there were several hosts and hostesses there I enjoyed and missed when HSN closed it down. Michelle was always a machine gun talker, there’s no doubt about that, but she was also well-prepared, knowledgeable, and always upbeat. I can remember when Michelle found a fella, finally, at the age of 41. She spoke about her guy often and about the upcoming wedding, but always tastefully and not for commercial gain. She was just so darn happy. It was endearing. I never heard her mention the hubby on JTV, so not sure if he’s still in the picture. Sorry to hear it if she got let go. She’s had some rotten luck with her jobs - AS closing, Gems TV closing, and now JTV not working out. Maybe some day we’ll hear what went wrong. I wish her the very best.

The problem with Michele Lau is that her mouth is like an assault weapon on one’s ears. I could never take her verbal diarrhea for more than a few minutes before I wanted to reach through the TV and slap her face shut. She was the same way on GemsTV too and probably every other place she’s worked/gotten fired from. You would think somebody would have tried to teach her the health benefits of taking a pause to breathe, but maybe somebody did and she was talking too much to hear.

I haven’t been posting or reading for a while because I took a bad fall on a hiking trail in May. :frowning: It’s taken this long for me to be able to lift my arm enough to type (sniff). Sitting around not able to do anything but watch TV for three months caused me to buy a lot of unnecessary crap off the shopping channels. (That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it). Fortunately, most of the time I came to my senses and made my disgruntled UPS driver pick the stuff back up so I could return it for a refund. All of which resulted in me getting the infamous ‘letter’ from QVC. They politely suggest that I think more carefully before I order anything from now on because they’d sure hate to lose me as a valuable customer. In other words: “knock it off or we’ll kick your ass out!”.

I fear, however, that my ass is destined to be kicked because that chainsaw on the fifteen foot pole was a REALLY BAD idea. :frowning:

I was reading at the “other” place and is it just my imagination or is it really getting kind of ‘cliquey’ over there ala the Q boards? You know, the old, " if you hate who we hate then we LOVE you, and if you say anything bad about one of our faves no soup–I mean–no ‘welcome to our board’ for you! " I’m not referring to any treatment I, myself, have received, but rather that of a couple of new posters I came across in my reading.

I saw where ‘sausage- casing’ Jamie Kerns Lima was getting slammed, lol. I’m surprised anybody dared to say a word against her again after the last uproar caused by her apologists.

Unfortunately this board seems a bit boring. Not very many people (including myself) are posting. If you are on Facebook, QVC Uncensored is a lot of fun. Come join us there. Everyone is welcome. No rules…QVC hosts and vendors, past and present, are all fair game.

Thanks for the tip, LipLiner. It is kind of like talking to yourself over here.

Maybe I should have started off my previous post with “Dear Diary”. LOL

I think we don’t have enough people posting in this thread. I’m going to check out that FB page too.

If Q can shove Courtney and Angel’s weddings down our throats, they can mention Alberti’s. It’s not like people don’t know he’s gay.

I wonder how much Lisa gets paid to shill for Louis Vuitton? Another selfie with a new LV bag, and now a Hermes scarf.

I think she bought the scarf just to have it sticking out of the LV bag.

Of the 2 weddings, Courtney’s and Alberti’s, I definitely would prefer to attend Alberti’s. The man has style, and I bet his wedding will be incredible.

I found QVC addicts Uncensored, but not QVC Uncensored. Is this the same thing?

Me too. That’s the one I joined, so I hope it’s the right one.

It is Honey.

I have a feeling they’ll be back. At the other place the mods just made a big post at the top of the screen announcing the Report This Post button. They said the icon has always been there but was not highlighted. So if anybody gets mad at anybody else, there’ll be a bunch of Report button-pushing, and people will scurry back over here.

Back on shopping topics, QVC had a very impractical tennis bracelet TSV for Gem Day this week. It is J324114, “Gemstone Sterling Silver Adjustable Tennis Bracelet 2.65 cttw” priced at $106.92 (today). It looked pretty and came in five choices of stones. The problem is the adjustable part. The bracelet has two long silver strings, and you pull a bead up and down to adjust the length of the bracelet. This means you have the two strings hanging down off your wrist. The smaller your wrist, the longer the strings.

Not a very good solution. If you pet your dog or cat with your bracelet hand, those strings will whack the poor furbaby’s head. Same if you reach over to brush hair out of your kid’s eyes. Or if you want to brush your own hair out of your eyes – you’re liable to whack yourself in the nose, and get the bracelet strings tangled in your hair.

The strings can snag your clothes, get caught in the grocery cart frame, and get caught in anything else, like the curlicue arm of a wrought iron chair. (I broke several watch and bracelet safety chains on patio chair arms.) And how would you ever be able to type with the silver strings dragging across the keyboard? Charm bracelets are bad enough, but a two- to three-inch long set of silver chains dangling down is just asking for trouble.

However, people were buying the bracelet. Two of the gemstone colors are on waitlist. I’ll be interested to see the reviews.

I just now found out that Carolyn had breast cancer. I popped over to the other board, and I haven’t been there in weeks.

I read her blog, and it seems likeshe’s doing okay. I really like Carolyn, and I hope she makes a complete recovery.

Sandra assured us that Carolyn is doing great and added that Carolyn is blogging about her situation, so it’s safe for herself and other hosts to talk about CG. I still don’t think it’s right, but maybe that’s just me?

Haven’t been posting, cause I rarely watch the Q these days. Shawn and some of the other hosts so turn me off that I’m not even tempted to tune in for snark value. I DID, however, buy my first Xmas gift at a local store yesterday, so my gift closet is well on it’s way to getting filled. You never know when the neighbor’s second cousin might drop by unexpectedly.

I have been trying to catch Girlfriend Friday on JTV – what a hoot those 2 gals are, but I have to admit, they do seem to know their stuff. I learned more about Larimar last night than I ever heard from hosts on other channels.

Yes, JTV is really educational about gemstones, especially the stones they feature that are seldom offered in quantity on other channels, such as larimar and chrome diopside. They have lots of gemstone information on the site, including their Gemopedia section, Gemopedia - Gemstone Encyclopedia

About the Girlfriend Friday shows, I enjoy those too, but I keep getting distracted by the 6-inch heels they always wear. (The hosts sit on a sofa for those shows instead of behind a desk, for those of you who’ve never watched.) All you can do with those heels when seated is prop your feet on the heels. It looks awkward. I always wonder if they kick off those painful heels and go barefoot during the shows when their legs and feet are hidden behind a desk. I sure would!

Me too. I applied but didn’t get approved. :frowning:
