Should a Yankee be elected to Canada's Parliament?

There’s an election coming up.

There’s currently at least one Yankee sittting in the House of Commons: Andrew Scheer.

Are there any others? Should any Yankee be in the House of Commons when we’re fighting a trade war with the Yankees?

I suppose it makes it slightly less likely that Trump will send a missile to Ottawa.

I don’t think any Yankee should be in the House of Commons, just as I don’t think any Canuck should be in the US House of Representatives or Senate.

What’s his batting average?

If that Yankee is a Canadian citizen, I think that should be all right! Just because the person was born in the U.S. shouldn’t disqualify that person. If that Yankee renounced American citizenship and took Canadian citizenship I think that would be very honourable.

He wasn’t born in the US. He’s an American citizen because his father is one.

Well, isn’t he a Canadian because he was born in Canada? Should he renounce his American citizenship to remove any taint of an American connection?

Let me re-phrase it: should a person who owes allegiance to the United States of America sit in the House of Commons during a trade war with the United States? Will he vote to support Canada, or the United States?

There have been about two dozen Canadian-born members of Congress.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a trade war, exactly. Dispute, certainly. You act as if the Cheeto-Faced Shit Gibbon is going to nuke Ottawa at any moment.

He’s said that the border is artificial, should be erased, and that the US should annex Canada by economic force.

Tariffs are just the opening salvo.

The Wall Street Journal has referred to Trump’s plans as the “Dumbest Trade War in History”. Of course, he immediately called the Wall Street Journal a failing liberal rag.

If I was related by birth to an American and I was born a Canadian citizen and in the Canadian House of Commons, I’d make it perfectly clear that my loyalties are with Canada and renounce my dual citizenship. I think that would be a proper thing for this “person born of Yankees” to do.

Nah. I believe you have made it clear that you won’t take back Ted Cruz, so fair’s fair.

If you’ve really got to elect a Yankee to Canada’ Parliament, I suppose Derek Jeter would be the least objectionable.

I’d make Alex Rodriguez take a drug test first.

Hey, pot’s completely legal up here!

Trump says he’s doing this to force Canada to surrender its independence. That’s a trade war. Let’s accept reality.

I have no information whatsoever about the person you’re referring to, but I have to assume he’s much smarter and more knowledgeable about state affairs than our POTUS, so I fail to understand why you wouldn’t want him around.

Agreed. The reality is that the United States is a hostile nation.

Canada should never let its guard down and acknowledge this direct threat to its sovereignty and national independence. Trump is the enemy, pure and simple.

Right; my bad.
