The Boston Globe is a conservative spin machine?
Jeff Jacoby sure as hell is a tool in that machine. Hence my skepticism. A quick Google search of the alleged quote also indicates it’s quite the topic of pseudo-outrage among the wingnut brigades, and it’s always wise to be skeptical about anything that outrages the Freepers.
I do some more checking, but I can’t believe that the Boston Globe would allow someone to print a falsified quote, even as an editorial. And it’s hard for me to imagine what context could make the quote sound reasonable, unless it started with “We have to be careful not to say things like…”.
No, but Jeff Jacoby, their current Op-Ed token, is part of it. One theory is that the Globe keeps him around to help make conservatives look foolish and hateful. They used to have John Ellis in that role before he decided he just couldn’t take paraphrasing Cousin Dubya’s campaign press releases and submitting them as his own work anymore.
If the *only * source of an alleged Dem quote is a hard-con opinion piece, it’s certainly wise to be skeptical of its veracity, right?
“Who among us does not love NASCAR?”
Huh? You lost me on that…
It’s a false quote from John Kerry, printed by the ever-so-sloppy Globe.
Invented by Maureen Dowd in the even-sloppier NY Times - which owns the Globe, FWIW.
The tape transcript of Kerry’s remarks is
Tape ends.
From Dean Nation: Dean hates Republicans?
I had originally read it in George Will’s column, but again no original source. I’ve tried to google up a transcript of the Jan 30 speech, but I’ve come up dry. Maybe I’ll post a thread in GQ and see if someone can sort this out.

Googling turns up many sources for Dean’s comment.
GOP officials are right to be thrilled at having that one at the head of the DNC, especially seeing him stick foot-in-mouth a few times already. Plenty of time for him to sink his own ship before the midterms…
Golly gee, that sure proves that lots of right-wingers are talking about the alleged quote. Thanks for clearing that up for us!
FWIIW, the remark was quoted in the New York Daily News by one of their staff reporters (as opposed to a wire story or an opinion piece) the morning after the meeting.
That’s the same link that **Brutus **gave, btw.
For anyone interested, I did open a GQ thread. No resolution yet…
OK, that is really, really weird. I swear on a stack of Straight Dope books that when I checked that link it was to a google search for the phrase. Minty’s comment seems to indicate that the same was true for him. Yes, Minty? No?
Not me. I was commenting on the Google search comment (which I had already done in first raising the question of false/mis-quote), not the link to the NYDN.
Well, shit. I must have had a massive brainfart then. Sorry about that, all.
Since manny offered this contemporaneous Washington Post article (see page 2) as a source in the GQ thread, I’m now satisfied that Dean actually said it. Dumbass. Hate the sin, not the sinner.
Does the Washington Post article cantain the “hate” quote? I didn’t see it.
My bad. I didn’t see there was a page 2…
