Should I buy this Victrola?

I have a yen to buy a Victrola.

I found one, owned by the parents of a co-worker.

It’s a 1906 Victor Talking Machine Company, Camden NJ VV-XIV #254568

Looks great and still plays well, comes with 20 needles. I imagine it would be a fun thing to own. I’ve got several old 78’s and I could see myself buying more

Asking price $400.00

I have not yet seen the item other than photographs but I’m intrigued.

Is this a fair asking price?

A quick look at ebay shows players from the same era going for anywhere from $200 to $500.

And since you know it works well the difference between the eBay low end and their asking price narrows. And here: The Victor-Victrola Page you can see that the VV-XIV was only built in 1910-12 and is relatively rare and valuable.

However, be advised that old 78s don’t really exist to be played. They are only good for about 75 plays before they become unlistenable (though most people here would say that they were unlistenable when they were brand new  ) and they are probably close to that already.

Actually, it looks to have been built 1n 1918. It’s a a VV-XIV: Nickel Hardware, No Sliding Shelf (1912-1921) model (I think), so it seems to not be that rare after all.

still might want it though.
