Should I dump my land line?

99% of all my non-office prsonal communication is via my cell phone. My land line has been out of commission for several months with a massive buzz that I haven’t been able to track down despited repeated fiddling . The house phone wiring is old and messily done, and I realize the best solution is re-wiring. My quandry is why I’m spending $40.00 a month (local + long distance) for a service I rarely, if ever, use these days.

I realize there are quality issues and my cell signal is not the best where I live, but I’m not doing business out of my house, I’m not a chat hound, and the signal is passable

Has anyone gotten rid of their land line?

Sure they have. I’ve taken the trouble to find not one, but two recent threads polling Dopers about their experiences with exclusive cell phone usage.

In my case, I justify the expense by saying that the low bandwidth requirements of my internet usage patterns fail to justify spending $20+ more per month for high-speed internet access when I can dial in to my university’s PPP server for free.

This might be sort of paranoid of me, but the reason I keep our land line in our house is that in the event that I need to phone 911 for assistance, they can pull up our address almost immediately. I have never had to call 911 in the past, I hope to not call 911 in the future, but one never knows.
