Should I dye my (prematurely) greying hair?

I’m about 3 months short of 30 years old, and I’ve had people telling me I have grey hairs for about 15 years now. What started as one or two strands in high school, however, has rapidly progressed. While still salt and pepper, I’m often taken aback when I see how white my hair has become in photographs. Most people guess my age at about 32-35.

So, I’m toying with the idea of dyeing it. What say you? Grey hair (silver, actually) has never bothered me. I don’t even really want all of it to go away. But I’m thinking of giving this a go, just to see how I’d look as a “young” man.

Any advice? Disclaimers? Horror stories? Opinions? All are welcome.

Sure, go ahead! While you’re at it, why don’t you slap on some makeup and false eyelashes!

j/k

Anecdotally, I have a friend who went salt & pepper, then gray in his 20s. He was, as it were, quite a success with the (20-something) ladies, and a lot of them were into his hair. Don’t ask me why, but there it is.

I guarantee you, there will be some doper ladies chiming in saying leave it be.

Then let me be the first! More often than not, gray hair on a man looks distinguished and sexy.

I know there are men and women who aren’t ready to go gray and for them, dyeing is the right thing. You don’t sound like you have a problem with it, so why bother?

Leave it be. Richard Gere didn’t get gorgeous till his hair went silver.

I went gray around 30 and I like the way it looks. It’s a nice, distinguished silver right now.

I died my slightly graying beard once, to match a wig I was wearing for a portrayal. It worked fine. It was also a royal pain in the neck. If you’re like me, dying it once will convince you not to bother dying it again.

I’ve known gray-haired youngsters, and they don’t look old at all. Maybe from far away, people might think you are old, but anywhere near you and the hair just isn’t that big of a factor.

So don’t dye it if you think it will make you look younger, because it probably won’t. But I’ve dyed my hair before just for a change, and if you want to see how you look with different colored hair, I’d say go for it.

There’s temporary dye at the store that only lasts about a month and I’ve found that it washes out of grey hairs first. You could try that first and if you like it go to a permanent dye.

Go ahead and do it. It’s not forever.

First off get your hair cut and then about a week later do the dye job.

Go to the ‘women’s’ colors. They have greater variety of colors and it is the same stuff. Get something that says it is for covering grey, or gray, as the case may be.

Then do this. Pick the shade you think your hair is, then put that box down and get one shade lighter.

Follow the instructions, and be sure to get some shampoo for color treated hair. A lot of shampoos will just take the color right out of it.

I cover my grey. I know, ladies say don’t do it, but when I get up in the morning and see my 50% grey hair, I feel old. Seeing a head of hair without the grey makes me feel better.

Gray hair on a young guy? ::swoon::

I say own it, work it!

(Full disclosure: I started growing out my hair when the first grays started showing up. My mother and her sisters all have beautiful silver hair – though my aunts dye theirs, boo – and I want a long silvery mane. At 40, I’m only up to about 10%, though.)

So I’m the only one that would want to see a pick of said look before giving someone advice about it?

Oh well. I’d probably just try photoshopping different color combinations onto it for an hour anyway.

Do what you feel comfortable with. I love dying my hair, it’s been every color of the rainbow, which is even how I got the nickname all my friends call me. Remember, it’s just hair. If you hate it it can be dyed a different color, stripped of color, or you can wait for it to grow back. Have fun with it!

I’d do it. Grey hair looks exotic in your twneties but in your thirties, it starts to age you. For both men and women. A good friend of mine who went grey early just turned 48 (but is very youthful looking) and stopped dying his hair. He appreciates the ease but it definitely makes him look much older.

Shave it and save yourself a ton of effort.

I would vote against it. Most hair coloring is a rather unhealthy, chemical-laden process. It is time consuming and, if you pay someone to do it, expensive.

First you dye your hair…
Then you dye you eyebrows, mustache, and beard…
When you get to contemplating dying your chest hair is when you realize the next logical step is your pubes!

Bolding is mine in quote.

So, people are guessing you are only slightly older than your real age? Don’t panic! If you are also balding noticeably - get your head shaved into a number 1 or 2 cut and keep it like that. If you are still luxuriant, then still keep it short (unless your features are Clooney-esque) but you have more flexibility as to style. Ask a good barber or a female hair stylist for advice. I wouldn’t advise dying your hair - it looks really fake unless it’s done professionally.

Nitpick: it’s “dyeing”. Unless you want to kill someone over the issue.

I think dying iot would be a royal pain. And then if it’s not kept up it will look worse. And then, if in 5 years you decide to stop dying it, you’ll appear to have aged instantly.

You are who you are is my motto. Maintaining yourself physically is much more important for all kinds or reasons, than maintaining yourself cosmetically.

I’m a 45 year old male with a bit of gray at the temples. I actually prefer the natural look of women who are comfortable enough in their own skin that hair dyes, make up, and the like are the exception to the rule. (I know you’re male, I’m just stating this for the record.)

God, I’d die to have salt and pepper hair, or any hair for that matter. I’m almost 30 myself, but I started balding at 25. I just shave it off so I don’t look like a mangy sasquatch.

I second the suggestion of trying semi-permanent color. The problem with the permanent color is that you have to keep dyeing it to make it look “normal”. Also, unless you’re willing to cut your hair very short or keep dyeing it forever, it’s very hard to switch from using permanent dye on your hair back to your natural color.
