I know there are around a dozen more-or-less current threads on the latest installment of the Star Wars series, but, for fear of learning too much, I haven’t read any of them. I’m probably gonna see a movie later today, or possibly tomorrow, and am thinking of making it Star Wars. Would it be worth my money, not to mention the wait in line? I liked the first three (or last three) films. As for Episode One, well, I thought Darth Maul was pretty cool, and the pod race was neat, but the rest of the movie, especially the parts with Jar Jar, sucked big Bantha bonggwa.
So, would I like this movie? Does it kick as much ass as it should (one critic said Lucas redeemed himself with this one)? Or is this just another little kids flick with obnoxious characters and a trillion dollars worth of special effects? Could somebody tell me about it without too many spoilers?
Color me underwhelmed. Very good effects, as usual, fairly interesting plotline, a few really bad (a-la Jar Jar) parts that, for me, ruined the rest of it. Jar Jar himself isn’t really annoying in this one, but IMHO some of the dialog really stunk. Some of the fight scenes, though, are absolutely fantastic.
Personally, if it was a tossup between SW and Spiderman, I’d pick Spiderman, but SW is worth seeing.
I consider myself a fan, and I would say I you could take or leave this film. If you do see it, and happen to get there an hour late, you won’t have missed much of the good stuff.
It seemed like a hour of movie stretched to over 2 hours.
I very much liked it as much as the first three, only it was oh so much prettier. The Jar-Jar parts were so small as to be almost ignorable fortunately. Ewan McGregor seemed to really enjoy his part this time around, and he does an excellent imitation of Alec (sp?) Guiness.
I haven’t yet seen Spiderman, so I can’t say which I’d choose, but I’d gladly watch AotC again given the chance.
Blah. It was mediocre at best. Of course, that makes it much better than Phantom Menace. Too much focus on blurry eye-candy, stilted dialogue, cardboard acting, awkward pacing and at least 2 scenes that seem to have been specifically designed for the video game.
Lots of twists and surprises in the plot, lots of intrigue.
A lightsaber battle that people will be talking about for a lifetime, wherever and whenever people discuss Star Wars.
Some of the actors have forgotten how to act, and a few of the lines sound like they were stolen from sitcoms, but overall, this is a pretty solid installment. Far better than episode one.
Besides, you wouldn’t want your last Star Wars experience The Phantom Menace. That would be like giving up on Star Trek at The Final Frontier, and never seeing the Undiscovered Country.
I could take it or leave it as well. I didn’t want my money back or anything, but neither did I have the desire to see it again. I only went to get my Geek Card ™ punched. BTW, I agree that Spider-Man was a way better, more fun movie.
I am really surprised at the number of people who found there to be plot twists. I don’t think i was surprised by a single thing. they basically just filled in holes.
I thought it was pretty good overall, despite the flaws… so i definitely recommend it. there are some really awesome parts that you just must see on the big screen!
Like I said in one of the other threads: If you like big drippy cheeseburgers, see AOTC. If you like expensive haute cuisine, don’t. I’m a cheeseburger kind of guy most of the time.
Well then, it looks like I’ll go see it tomorrow. As has been mentioned, I can’t avoid spoilers all summer. And it’s inevitable that I’ll see this movie someday anyway, so I might as well see the huge battle(s) and amazing crosses fingers special effects on the big screen where they really matter. Plus, some people who seem to have tastes similar to mine have given it thumbs up. I’ll probably post tomorrow night whether the Force was with Lucas & Co. this time or not.
Oh, for heaven’s sake, it’s not a lifetime commitment; it’s a movie! Go see it! have some popcorn! Enjoy the heck out of it, because it’s a great ride, then go see Spider-man too.
