Should I sell all my stuff?

Hello all,

In going along with my depression and uncertainty about the future, I have been slowly downsizing my ample collections of comic books, action figures, and other stuff like that. So far I haven’t gotten rid of anything I will miss, and I occasionally make a little extra money selling on eBay or making deals with collectors on other message boards and enjoy the extra space cleared up at the same time.

But eventually I’m going to be stuck with two piles: things NOBODY wants, and things that are really cool that people will want, but I am attached to. My childhood G.I. Joes and Transformers, my DC Super Powers and Marvel Secret Wars figures, my more recent DC Direct collection, my Simpsons toys, my huge collections of complete comic book runs and trade paperbacks. So how 'bout it? Should I just have a big “Everything About Lou Must Go!” sale, and say goodbye to the past, ditch my childhood, screw sentimental value, and take the money and run? Is it better to travel light and unencumbered and unattached to things, or to have shelves of cool books and fun comics and movies and toys and CDs?

I suggest keeping the most sentimental items but keep them away from you. Safe deposit box, storage locker, parents house, whatever. I recently read something somewhere(although I’m unable to find it by googling) that sentimental clutter causes a form of mild depression. (Well clutter does, sentimental clutter more so).

Just be a little careful. Getting rid of clutter is always good, but depression can cloud your judgment. I have given away some pretty valuable things during depressive episodes. I’ve gotten rid of a lot of crap too, of course.

Off-loading stuff is generally a good thing to do every so often. My personal passion is books, but if I didn’t prune the collection every 5 years or so, I’d be buried in paper. Pick a few essential items of great value and/or sentimental value, and sell the rest for all you can get. Then use the cash to fund NEW ACQUISITIONS!
