Should I take this job?

One problem with being a programmer is that most of the good jobs are in high-cost areas of the country. So I was thrilled to find a job in the Midwest that pays well, has great people, and has solid prospects for the future. They’ve made me an offer of employment, but I haven’t accepted just yet.

The company was recently acquired by a huge Chinese conglomerate. This means I’ll have to travel to China at least once every few months. Also, there appears to be some friction between the Chinese managers and the American managers. Apparently, the Chinese managers want American workers to work ten hours a day instead of eight.

I worked at another company that dealt with a huge Chinese conglomerate. The Chinese promised to buy the company and move everyone to China, but then they suddenly stopped answering their phones and email.

Right now, I’m planning to take the job. But I’m nervous. Has anyone here had any experiences with a company bought by the Chinese?

Well, I work for a Chinese company. One of the largest manufacturing companies on the planet. I speak Chinese fluently, have lived in China for 20 years, so different from your situation.

There will definitely be teething pains. Going to China once every few months should be awesome (where would you go)?

Yes, Chinese work pretty long hours. Timezone wise, the Midwest might kinda suck. Not sure your role, but if you need to hand over what you’ve done every day, then you’ll probably have a Concall every day in the late afternoon/early evening. This actually is quite a big deal. Get it spelled out how you need to communicate with the mother ship. If you need to do a 6:00PM call every day, when are you expected to get into the office?

[hijack] Given that Trump has at a minimum sidetracked the US of A at the same time that planets are aligning for China, having experience working for a Chinese related company is probably pretty good for your resume. [/end hijack}

Fuck yeah!

FYI

Where do you live now?
