If you need better video stability, I’ve found ME slightly more stable than 98 SE. At least my video work performs better and my DVD’s play a little better. But I found a couple serious problems with the Firewire support and CD support.
My brother has installed XP on his machine (he had 98 SE and upgraded to ME like I did) and he swears by it. We’re both doing audio and video editing, and he had all kinds of problems with him machine under ME. He said once he installed XP all his problems went away.
I’m going to attempt to upgrade one of my machines to XP soon, as I need to find out how well it will play in a multiple OS environment. But I’ve heard very good things about XP from some reliable sources, so I’d say skip the ME and go for the XP.
I have several computers. Win 95, Win 98, Win ME.
I see almost no difference. Win ME did not come with the Personal Web Server, but I installed it from the Win 98 disk, so no big deal.
Win ME has the recall software on it.
Win 95 does not support multiple monitors. I haven’t upgraded the Office Suite on that computer to Office 2000 or SmartSuite Millenium, which might be a problem.
If everything works with what you have, stick with what you have. Sometimes upgrades go smoothly, but, at least as often, I have ended up formatting the hard drive.
I also can’t see any reason to upgrade to XP. Wait until you have to buy a new computer.
Isn’t XP the only OS that has a NTSF file system option which lets you use larger files? I think that’s the only reason to use it at the moment.
